boxers in this era find ways to go out of their comfort zone and jump weights to seek bigger payday. gone are the days when a great fighter spends 5 solid years stamping dominance in his division. Only fighters like dawson, john, kessler and diaz have remained in their main division in the last 3 years.. being 3 division world champion almost assures a slot in the hall of fame. of the 31 three division champions in boxing history, only leo gamez, wilfredo vazquez, duke mckenzie and iran barkley may not made into the HOF i feel that montiel, darchinyan and cotto are my top 3 candidates to be 3 division champions before they retire. others considered are lopez, williams, hopkins, penalosa, guzman, calderon and rafa marquez
Paul Williams is a possibility - already 147 and 154 WBO champ. Just don't know how he'll cope with a good sturdy 160-pounder like Abraham - though he overwhelmed my main man Winky - Git
Williams. Titles already at 147 & 154. He will pick up a belt at 160. Especially with Abraham moving up and Pavlik possibly aswell. JuanMa will. Already got a 122 belt. I think he'll win titles at 126 & 130 aswell, and potentially 135 aswell. Valero will probably pick up some 140 belt against another mediocre fighter, like he's already done at 130 & 135. Hopkins could potentially move down to 168 and beat Froch to become a 3 weight world champion, titles already at 160 & 175 obviously. There's still the possibility of him moving up to 200lbs aswell, though probably not against Adamek anytime soon. Nonito Donaire can pick up belts at 115 & 118 to go with his 112 belt. Darchinyan can pick up a 118 belt against Agbeko to go with his 112 & 115 belts. Guzman can definately win a belt at 135 to go with the 122 & 130 belts. Montiel is can be a proper 3 weight world champion if he beats Eric Morel for the full WBO belt at 118. To go with 115 & 112 titles.
there are reports that montiel said to the press that he is already recognized as full champion by the wbo and would defend the full title against morel valero is an excellent choice. he rejected $200,000 tune-up fight
Valero I picked only because I don't think potentially 140 opponents are a bit chinny. Tim Bradley, Amir Khan - if he beats Andriy Kotelnik - to name 2 of the 3 belt holders. There's Urango moving up and probably vacating aswell - he'd batter Valero so there's no chance of that fight. Both Bradley & Khan are far more skilled and would school Valero if they had better chins but they are always likely to be caught with something and can be knocked down and out. He just better stay away from Pac for his sake, I'd love to see it purely to put the rubbish to rest about how Valero would beat Pacquiao - from a handful of people it has to be said not the majority. I don't think the majority need telling that Pacman would absolutely murder him at 140.
would you guys really give williams two divisions already? The phillips fight was for the interim WBO belt.
I know this may be irrelevant. But in a few more years I can see Danny Jacobs doing big things. Kid has had 16 pro fights in under 2 years... I wouldn't doubt that soon he'll beast 3 divisions
Interim doesn't count, which is pretty bad news for Williams, who has plenty of time, and for Arce, who has little time do pull it off. Vic Darchinyan could be very next, or Fernando Montiel even before the Raging Bull, but don't count out JuanMa and Donaire down there, although they have a long road ahead. I don't think Calderon will move up, he's not getting any younger or taller. Maybe Roman Gonzalez or the legendary Koki Kameda, but are they good enough? I'm not sure... It is definitely too late for Penalosa, maybe Rafael Marquez can move up, but I don't think he wants to. Caballero is so damn tall and making his move to FW, but he's not that good IMO. Gamboa doesn't look like a future LW champion, he's small and short handed. But Linares is already a 2-division champ and has the height and youth, so who knows, same with Valero. Khan's future is unpredictable, but I can see him moving down and up to at least try it. I feel it's a bit too late for Nate, but what about Guzman? I think he can do it. I'm sure of Cotto and Williams, although the Punisher gotta make that 'interim' disappear from his latest title. Victor Ortiz and Danny Jacobs both have the potential and who knows, Boo Boo Andrade, AJ Banal, Erislandy Lara, Alexei Acosta, Luis Garcia, Fernando Guerrero... too many to count, I wouldn't predict just yet. Chad Dawson has the size for CW. Hopkins has the cards to either compete at CW or at SMW. There are many POTENTIAL names. But I think Vic, Montiel and Hopkins are the next 3, if not Hopkins, then Guzman would be my 3rd choice.
it's official, montiel joins the club of elite mexican legends(chavez. barrera, morales & marquez) having won three titles in three different divisions penalosa is now the # 2 contender despite the beating from lopez. there is a potenial montiel-penalosa showdown. as penalosa would be elevated to #1 after the montiel-morel title fight
