Featherweights. 15 rds. We all know that Lopez is in for a very rough start...Gomez will put him on the deck...But can he keep him there?
Danny wins this by KO, no doubt about it whatsoever in my mind. Lets not forget that Gomez tried to punch Lopez stablemate Alberto Davila while he was flat on his back. That last fact wasn`t lost on Danny who was then aching to get Gomez into a ring anytime, anyplace. Plus, if the lighter hitting Sanchez could do to Gomez what he did, then I think that the much harder hitting and naturally bigger Danny decapitates him within 10 rounds. I would not be surprised to see "Little Red" get dropped early in the fight, but usually whenever Danny got dropped the end wasn`t too far off for his opponents. When they went in for the kill is when they usually got nailed and taken out by Danny, who one sportswriter once said he usually planned his KO`s from the seat of his pants. Either way, to get a good idea of what it was like to move up to fight "Little Red" from a lighter weight division take a look at Lopez/Olivares... I don`t see Gomez being able to do any better. Same goes for how a fight between Danny and the "Foul One" would unfold in my opinion... Gomez being the more skilled fighter of the two, but naturally smaller and less durable than "Little Red" who`s size and power will be the deciding factor. Every fight I saw Gomez fight in as a featherweight he got hurt and stunned, fighters such as LaPorte and Lockridge had him badly hurt several times, and we all know what a beating Azumah gave to Gomez in their bout. Danny hit harder than ALL of these guys, and he threw a LOT of punches every round, and he could keep up that pace all night long as he was in spartan shape for every fight. The same cannot be said for Wilfredo who faded late in every featherweight bout of his that I saw, and I have seen all of them. Danny`s high punch output pretty much guarantees that he will eventually land that atomic right hand of his on Wilfredo, and when Danny had you reeling he got you out of there quickly. The best version we saw of Wilfredo at featherweight never beats the best of Lopez, too small and does not have the chin to hold up against Danny`s power. Wilfredo`s defence wasn`t as great by the time he moved up to featherweight either, as his reflexes and footwork had diminished enough to make him a lot more hittable. And against "Little Red" that will be a very big problem, as the last thing you want is a fired up Lopez looking to knock your head into the crowd. Had these two fought it is important again to note how angry Lopez was at Wilfredo`s punk move of trying to punch Lopez stablemate and friend Albert Davila while he was flat on his back. Lopez would have gone into their fight a man on a mission, and he would have been hell bent on giving Gomez a thorough beating for what he did. Being that he is also bigger, stronger and harder hitting, I just don`t see how the skill difference will be enough for Wilfredo to offset Danny`s significant physical advantages. I stand by what said. Lopez wins by KO, and I do mean a clean ten count KO, not TKO. Lopez KO8 Gomez
This is a tough matchup for me but I'm going to say Gomez stops him middle rounds. Lopez tended to get knocked down and Gomez was a ruthless finisher. I think Gomez would get him in trouble at some point and wouldn't let him off the hook.
Haha, as you should pal! Danny is just too big, too strong and too hard hitting for Wilfredo to overcome, I`d bet the house on it especially since as I already pointed out Danny would have been going into their fight extra motivated looking to get payback for what Wilfredo tried to do to his good friend and stablemate Alberto Davila in their bout. Would have been an absolute war while it lasted, but the end result is a foregone conclusion as far as I`m concerned, Danny wins it by KO.
I always felt like Gomez' fight against Sanchez just couldn't have gone any worse for Gomez. I felt like he could have and should have done better (although I still think Sanchez always wins that fight). But you have me looking at it differently now. I mean, that shot from Sanchez that put Gomez down wasn't a huge shot and it really wasn't Sanchez's M.O. I still think it's a really bad idea to get hurt against Gomez but you make a damn persuasive argument on this one.
At Featheweight, 15 rds: Gomez puts Lil' Red down a couple of times....probably hits Lopez when he is on the ground like he did against Zarate & Davila. But Lopez won't quit, and TKO's Gomez late while being way behind in the fight.
Agreed, Gomez' best chance is to take the slower Lopez out early, If Lopez finds his rythum & starts to come on late, Gomez would be in trouble, especcially if his left eye starts to swell & wont be able to see the right hands coming...
Excellent post:deal This is a bit off topic, but I have to differ with the many people who rate Sanchez's win over Gomez higher than his win over Little Red. When Sal beat Danny, Sal was the smaller man who moved up and beat the crap out of The Man at 126. When Sal beat Gomez, Sal was The Boss at 126, and Gomez was the smaller man who moved up. Put those facts together with your accurate analysis of Lopez/Gomez, and I have to rate the win over Danny higher than the win over Gomez.
Sanchez had about 14 fights at feather (or bigger) before he fought Lopez. Sanchez was a full-fledge featherweight when they fought I conclude.
Just did a quick review on Box rec. Looks like Sanchez was all over the map before his fight with Lopez. I did not realize that. However, Danny was the first big win, and I think Little Red stands Gomez on his head at some point. I still think that when a 21 or 22 year old kid decisively beats the champ it's a better win than Gomez who came along after Sal had considerable high level experience. (Of Course Danny is a top 5 all time favorite of mine, so I am pretty biased.)
You may be right about Gomez needing to take Danny out early, but here's what generally happened to guys who tried that:yep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdaVSVefmck
