I know it sounds harsh, and I do have a little sympathy for Ken, but by and large Bremner is spot on.
There's people sleeping in the street in **** and people wanna raise money for this? I know it's stupid but it will work out ok. I'm in good nick, it's difficult to give it up." Buchanan is determined to make a comeback in order to fund a legal challenge after an Edinburgh newspaper claimed he sold his five championship belts earlier this year because he needed the money. Buchanan insists he actually sold the Lonsdale, European, WBC, WBA and Ring magazine belts to businessman Willie Garriok so they could be exhibited in the National Museum of Scotland. The Scot was undisputed lightweight champion until 1972, when he relinquished his title to Roberto Duran after a controversial below-the-belt punch.
http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=19850&more=1 Forget all the should he have the freedom to fight if he chooses arguments, Buchanan is saying that he needs to fight to make money. Buchanan's argument is that fighting is all that he knows. Buchanan was not a heavyweight, if he were to be in any physical shape at all the heaviest he could be now is middleweight, and he was never a power puncher. Can the fact that a former world champion at the age of 64 is fighting again garner enough attention to give Buchanan more annual income than being an employee at a fast food chain?
But he doesn't want to work at a fast food chain. He wants to work at the thing that earned him love and respect. The man had open-topped bus parades through the city of Edinburgh, now he's struggling. It thinke he's been struggling since the first divorce. So. It's not about the money. Not in my view, no matter what he says.
Fighting isn't all he knows. Buchanan is a time-served carpenter. Thats what he turned his hand to when he quit the ring.
He's suffered no long term damage from his career looking at how old he currently is. If he wants to fight and make more money then he could otherwise, no problem in my eyes. Not like he's going to be matched with a world class prime fighter. Look at Camacho, almost 50 and disintered, he's matched up with other well past 40 fighters. So it goes sometimes in the game.
Were his motives purely financial, I'm fairly certain he'd be able to make more doing the autobiography/touring thing like Meldrick Taylor's doing these days (for $225, you can get an autographed picture, glove, and copy of his autobiography, for example) , or even venturing into motivational speaking than he would for whatever underground fight he takes place in. Unless we finally get that Buchanan-Duran rematch.
I think a promoter of unlicensed events could get him as much as 50,000 against some novice green as a gourd or some other fellow almost as old as himself...if the novelty of 'Duran/Buchanan 2' could be pulled off, or something like it, maybe even more.
I'm going to be completely serious here; sideshow-ish as it would be, and even with the complete expectation on my behalf of a terrible fight, I wouldn't even hesitate to watch a Buchanan-Duran rematch today.:!:
Yup, the fighter will be a very lower caliber one if the fight is unlicensed and the fighter isn't even ranked or a consistent professional.
It's hard to understand what the **** Ken is doing. Is it for the money? For the lawsuit? For the fame?Whatever the reason,it is a bad omen and he will only embarrass himself and the sport.
