Why did Mayweather look sluggish in the Baldomir fight?

So I rewatched the Baldomir / Mayweather fight. At 147, Mayweather seemed slower than I remember and a bit sluggish at times. He was fighting Tata and should have looked light years faster than him, but there were times where Baldomir connected.

I know its been brought up before about starting to slow down physically. This brings up the topic of a match-up between him and Manny Pacquiao. At this point, it seems Pacquiao is the fresher of the two and although Mayweather would have an advantage to a certain degree regarding skillset, i think Pacquiao would have the advantage on physical attributes (speed and stamina)

Yes, I am fully aware that Pacquiao fought a walking corpse in De la Hoy but Pacquiao's speed and energy that night could not ignored.

What are your thoughts on this?

    I don't understand this sentence..
DLH wasn't a walking corpse vs Floyd. Floyd won by SD.
And which night do you mean? Pac vs DLH?

    well a few reasons....

    he hurt his hand

his trainer was locked up, so he didn't get to work on the pads and not very much guidance/tactics for the fight.

Yes a good trainer makes a difference, even for floyd mayweather.

I am not sure how having a hurt hand will make someone sluggish. If anything, I would think he would take steam off his punches and hit lighter, but with more speed. He just looked flat that night.

Floyd said in between rounds at one point that he found Baldomir to be "awkward."

I didnt think Floyd looked all that great in any of his fights above 140..not the kind of great he was at 130.

I didn't think he looked bad. Baldomir is/was a good fighter, and he schooled him like he was nobody.

It was a hella boring fight though.

I don't remember him looking particularly sluggish. Of course I haven't watched the fight since, but I thought he was much more careful of Baldomir than he was of Judah beforehand. I think he respected Baldomir as a far bigger man and just fought uber cautious. Maybe that's why he seemed sluggish. But the dazzling combination of speed and power he showed and 140 and below has been missing at 147. IMO Floyd is a natural light welter not a welter.

My thoughts are..... I think you were watching a different fight, what I saw was a masterclass in boxing to shutout a big WWT champion without ever being troubled.

Carlos was very average though, one of the more average welter champs of the last decade..He just put on a hell of performance against smaller, inconsistent headcase in Judah and whooped the smaller, faded and almost as limited Gatti to get his shot at Floyd...Floyd made him look like nobody because he was one. most of his career prior to and after that fight just supports that IMO .

He did have a head of friggen rock though and was physically bigger then Floyd..that along with the fact I think the move to welter just took a little polish and impact off Floyd's overall package would be the reasons for him looking below par. Which I dont think he was as such, he looked fine even with the injury hampering him, did what he had to and got a lopsided decision..in a situation where you are more or less out of your element weight wise I think thats totally acceptable..I just didnt see the same brillant Floyd at welter though.

130 was his prime weight, Duran never looked better above LWT, Robinson wasnt better above WWT, nor was Leonard, Jones jr at SMWT... your naturally going to be best at your best weight.... but to say FMJ hasnt looked great in any of his fights above 140 is crazy... I thought he was great vs Baldomir, Judah, DLH & Hatton.

Well Duran actually looked as good as you are going to see him against Palomino and Leonard I,very complete.

Im not sure how you can say that about Robinson, are you keeping a stash of his welterweight fights from the world because I would love to see them.

Mayweather looked awesome at 130.great even and at welter not "all that great" yes..relative to the kind impact his skills and ability he had at 130, his 147 form is just so-so.
Thats why Im not totally following your arguement..you say he isnt going to look as good there because it isnt his best weight..yep agreed that pretty much what Im trying to say but its "crazy" to say he isnt a great welter?

mayweather lost a bit of speed i beleive at the lower weights he was a bit faster, i first noticed what i thought was a slight decrease it speed in the judah fight
