When a fighter is coming up, from time to time.. we get a few who remind us of fighters we've seen previously... (and this view can differ from person to person with regards to the same fighter!).

Was interested in finding out what kinda matching went through the heads of other people, here...

(Note: this is not a boxing chimera thread where you compare each & every part of a boxer to several different boxers... -- it's supposed to be broad & overarching).

I'll start us off with some:

When I first saw Paulie Malignaggi, so many things about him were echoes from the past... echoes emanating from memories of one specific character from the not so-distant past: Prince Naseem Hamed!
And it wasn't just the cocky but still friendly attitude or the charisma.
It was first & foremost the slickness inside the ropes & the beautiful reflexes + creative method of slipping punches!

"Vicious" Victor Ortiz... & "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas.
I've always been reminded of El Feroz, whenever I see Ortiz fight. While Ortiz may be a southpaw, he has that same relentless style as Vargas and is similarly physically-imposing/dominating... with the same seemingly endless series of successive power-punches! Plus the similarity of the nicknames... & the fact they're both alliteratively placed before their actual first-names.. is an uncanny similarity reflecting, perhaps, their uncanny style-resemblance!

Amir Khan - Oscar De La Hoya (dareisayit?)
While Khan may actually require a jaw transplant (preferrably from a pure-blood Mexican with the patented Mexican jaw!!), several things remind us of De La Hoya. That amateur style of punches in bunches, again & again & again...; he's tall & lean like Oscar was (and like Oscar has started off as being huge for his original weight-class &, like Oscar did, has the potential to have an illustrious career moving up the weights... -- Britain could get a 4 or 5-weight world champion! ;)). Plus they both have beautiful jabs... and both underused this weapon (though since going to Roach this is becoming less & less of an issue for Amir). Fast, deceptively-powerful, combinations...! Though while Amir don't have Oscar's chin, I suspect he is a better athlete & won't have Oscar's problem of losing the last 3-4 rounds of every fight automatically by virtue of lack of gas for those rounds. Still, a new Jaw for Christmas or Eid wouldn't go amiss for Amir!

[wouldn't it be just ironic if we saw Khan-Ortiz in a few years, if Warren has another brain-freeze ala pre-Prescott, ...and Khan comes out on top in the same manner as Oscar did vs. El Feroz. hah.
No chin-rants / match-up analyses, please... it was just something pointed out with a light-heart, ...sensing potential irony ahead, I hope!]

...that's 3 from me for now.. let's have some from youse.

that's for another thread ;-). But even if he doesn't hit the heights of his true-potential.. and only goes halfway. He STILL has the potential to be considered Britain's greatest ever boxer (how many Brits have been 3-weight world champions, anyone???).

Though I've not seen as much from Berto as other fighters, when talking of Berto vs. top-drawer opponents where there's a realistic chance of losing, he does remind me of Jermain Taylor a lot. Athletic, physically-gifted, powerful & fast...

Actually, Malignaggi reminded me of Camacho, probably because of his trunks and stance. t

Floyd kind of reminds me of an in-shape James Toney.

JMM reminds me of Finito Lopez

You mean Toney pre-THAT burger king visit! :D
But yeah, I can see where you get that. It's a good one to suggest given that not many marquee, famous world champions are able to use that Def. inside & both look good + actually be effective... !

Finito Lopez. I'd agree with that, definitely. He was a Nacho-product too, wasn't he?

Comment on each other's suggestions please, amigos.:think

When Tito beat William Joppy in the Garden for the 160lb title, I truly thought I was watching our generations' ROBERTO DURAN

Hands of Stone & Hands of Plaster. JkN!

It's valid. However that door leads to many such comparisons- many could say the same of Pacquiao (& Duran). What is clear though, is that Duran is the most overachieving lighter-weight boxer who moved up in weight to fight much bigger, heavier -and critically, still LIve & threatening- opponents.

Then you can say Mayorga-Trinidad, also.

Personally, I felt Trinidad was a much better BOXER than some people gave him cred for. He wasn't physically-imposing in the manner of a Vargas! & look at the way he had success when he moved up past welterweight... it was because of his power, not outmuscling people, that his success carried on up onto middleweight!

Yes, all are similarly unrelenting power-punchers.

However I think the best comparison there is still my <Vicious Victor Ortiz - Ferocious Fernando Vargas>! Even though Ortiz fights southpaw.
