Stevie was a good fighter...one of the best wins of that year for any fighter. But a lot people cant see how he lost those, because though he was bullied around, he actually seemed to land the more effective blows. I personally found it a hard one to split though,,dont think I have ever sat done and scored it to tell you the truth,
That one is always dismissed, particularly by Floyd huggers because Floyd wasn't as successfull and yikes - may have lost once or twice.
First of all no he was not the greatest 140 lbs ever not when there have been greats such as Cervantes, Benitez, Ortiz, Pryor, Loche, Arguello, Camacho, Chavez, who in their primes were better than Tszyu. Yes, I love Tszyu and his exciting boxing style, but the truth is he was an outstnding amatuer and good Pro thats it. He does not have the requisite scalps in his resume to claim anything more! and the resume is pretty thin. His greatest victory is Zab Judah? the truth is he got lucky with a right and timed it perfectly. Had Judah had the sense to recover he would have probabaly beat Tszyu down, just look at the first round. I think Tszyu was 'overrated his weakness was pressure and he did not like to be crowded and its why Phillips scorched him and a decent but average champ like Hatton iced him that and old age and a hometown ref of course. The truth is he is overrated around here a good and decent Champion but not an ATG and not the best 140 lbs ever. Please reel in the fanaticism and look at the man objectively its all there as plain as day
You really think all those fighters should be ranked at 140 Raf? A lot did their best work at other weights. I dont rate him the greatest 140 pound champ ever for several reasons but the fact is he showed a level of consistent dominance over the division that few fighters have hung around to do. Kostya would be well down my list of alltime 140 champs if a lot of the fighters mentioned who had stopped over at 140 had carved out a more significant career there. But the fact is Im reluctant to call them true 140 pounders and from the fighters who you could say were Kostya is right up there.
He landed 2 of those so-called 'lucky punches' in a row. He weathered everything Judah threw at him in the first round and kept coming at Judah. He hurt Judah with a bodyshot at the end of rd 1 which made Judah wary of him in the second. After being stalked for 2 mins 30 seconds of the 2nd round, Judah was poleaxed by Tszyu. There was nothing lucky about Tszyu landing the first overhand right that stopped Judah in his tracks, and there was nothing lucky about the second overhand right that dropped Judah like a hot brick and made him bounce back up like a demented superball, and then drop another 2 times. It was patience, ring generalship, accuracy and power, not luck.
Arguello and Benitez AT may be better fighters than Tszyu - but Arguello never won a title and Benitez was only there for a few fights. Phillips "scorching" Tszyu ended with Vince in hospital after the fight - He went through hell to win that fight. I would place Chavez, Loche, Pryor and think long and hard about Cervante's being superior to Tszyu at 140
Actually doomy, Benitez had a couple of defenses of his title at 140 before he moved up 3 I think, maybe even 4. Plus a couple of non-titles bouts against some contenders.
Yeah your right, and I dunno even what I was smoking to forget that, however I did edit my original post to look less high. It's not as good as my typo in accusing Floyd of making Marquez go up 22 pounds instead of 12 but pretty terrible all the same. Overall though - I would still rate Tszyu overall at 140 as a superior fighter, at 140lbs.
