In hindsight, maybe the first win over Lopez was the better win. I don't think it's a stretch to say Lopez was the better featherweight than Gomez. But at the time, no. Gomez was 32-0-1 with 32 ko's coming in to the fight with Sanchez. He was a superstar thought to be in his prime.
Wasn't the draw with LaPorte after the Sanchez fight? ( was it a draw)? I could have swore it was 32-0 unblemished.
Gomez had a draw in his first pro fight and then knocked out 32 straight! He got the decision against Laporte (a fight I've never seen).
I see it as Bull myself. Danny too big and hard punching. i like the comparison with the Lopez Olivares fight which I've watched recently. Danny could be stunned and knocked down but keeping him there was a different matter. Olivares who could punch as we all know put up a better fight than I was expecting and landed some huge shots on Danny. As the fight progressed Danny started walking through them and he looked so much bigger. Lopez by mid round ko with Gomez badly banged up as well..
I've always felt that Danny's chin was fine. He went down because of balance issues. that's been my take on it over the years.
Gomez was a much better all around fighter than lopez and would have had very little trouble outboxing him. My only question was could he take a lopez punch right on the button. I think that he could. Also, lopez wouldn't be able to find gomez often enough to wear him down. In the mean time Gomez would be landing his own damaging counterpunches which would set up a tko somewhere around the 10th round
What a great fight and what a tough pick !! Gomez, was tighter, slicker and punched great in combination. While Lopez was methodical, in great shape, and had TNT in his fists,he could do it with one shot. I don`t see Gomez taking out Lpez early. he has to respect Lopez power, even though Lopez is a slow starter. Gomez could possibly grind and chop Lopez up a bit. But, if forced to make a pick. I say a very bloddy banged up Lopez (prime Lopez, not the Sanchez fights) catches Gomez in the 8 or 9th round. Gomez chin could be reached,Sanchez showed that. And asking Gomez chin to hold up against Lopez at 126 is a mighty tall order... I do expect Lopez to have some very rough moments until he gets the bomb on Gomez however...
Gomez by KO in the late rounds of a 15 round fight. I love Danny, but he is too straight for Gomez. In Gomez Danny would be fighting a super good fighter and not one like the ones that had him on the floor only for Danny to get up to knock them out. It would be the Bobby Chacon fight all over again!!
