What Buchanan is doing isnt unprecedented. Jem Mace, a hundred years before him, fought for the British HW title at 60, but continued to dabble in exhibitions and actual bouts into his late 70's.
I saw Buchanan fight Lance Williams 16-6-3 ,in 1981 at Wembley. Ken showed brief flashes of his wonderful skills ,even putting Williams down but lost the 8 rounder on points ,he had lost his previous 2 fights ,and lost his next one ,then retired ,he collected a couple of thousand pounds for the fight at most . Now ,28 years later ,you think he can get £ 50,000 for a fight? :huh
Well anyone can come back and fight, but why don't the boxing commissions just say no. Tommy Hearns is going to fight again soon also and he is almost 51.. The commissions have to say no to Buchanan and Hearns. Why are they being allowed to fight? Isn't that the odd thing?
i remember him knocking najib daho out in 81 or 82 in 8 rounds.daho was pretty tough but ken gave him a boxing lesson before dropping him
probably what the intentions are, Sad old man says he gonna come back cos his ass is skint, people feel sorry all donate blah blah blah, he does some interviews saying thanks for the 100k, and thats that
he really is in a bad way with the alcohal .When i read what he was saying about a comeback i shook my heid in despair and i feel that the true extent as to how far he has fallen from grace. Over the last year i have personally been told stories about him being that **** faced hes been on public transport shouting and just making a general nuicense of himself. I also understand he frequent most of the pubs on Leith Walk in edinburgh and is happy to get drinks bought for him to go over the stories in his career...no shame in that but i understand he is barred. its a shame that one of scotlands top boxers ,and the only british boxer curently to be in the hall of fame ,has fallen from grace like this. if anyone is going to give him the oppertunity to fight, while he currently has a broken back really needs to look at themselfs and should be exiled by the great and good of boxing
Yes, and only for one reason: he's a living legend. Thing is, no one will buy into a series of fights. If Buchanan wants to get money, he will have to try and sell the idea of one big match. As much of a freak show Duran/Buchanan 2 would be, it would sell tickets, bet your ass it would. But if he was to fight Joe Blow, you know he would get significantly less.
I know it sounds cynical but theres a very real possibility that all this talk of fighting again because he's skint is just his way of shilling for a benifit gig???
If you want to see how bad / sad Ken is under drink.....wind forward two minutes into this interview on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ2Ze2Hbt8U Sad to see one of the great artisans of the ring like this
That could very well be. I'm sure he'd take the offer if it was given to him. But at the same time, or maybe we're all just too familiar with the same old song, every fighter never wants to ever really retire.
