The Winky-Calzaghe thread got me thinking: MARQUEZ or MOSLEY?

i'm not that versed on early hopkins or winky. i started following boxing much later than when i started myself.

 

last post for me tonight.

 

Its a good matchup.

I dont feel Winky's style matches as well against someone as dynamic as Norris could be.
Obviously Norris' main weakness was his chin and his tendency to expose it to unnecessary leather whilst getting carried away or drawn into a brawl. 2 things I cant see Winky exposing with how he goes about things and his lack of fight changing power.

Winky is a very hard guy to deal with at his best and one of the most overlooked fighters of his generation.
But even in his best fights I just didnt see the ability that would see him beat a lot of the 154-160 greats..just hang with them and make it difficult.

 

Exactly.. the deeper you tred, the harder it is to justify Calzaghe.

He will be the one remembered more in 10, 20 & 25 years.
But really, upon dissection.. Winky had the better career (opponents being key as they both became undisputed kings of their division, cleared it out..).

I have to go with Mosley ATM. But if Marquez wins a title @ 140.. & 147... he's got a good case for overtaking De La Hoya in the best fighters of this generation....

 

I like Marquez for this. I think he has more attributes to his 'a' game.

Mosley is great at what he does, but struggles to adapt when someone moves the goal posts.

I think JMM is the all round better technician, a more difficult and dogged opponent, with a better skillset.

 

I'd say wait until their careers are over. They are dead level on resume. It's going to be a photo finish because to me they've both got about the same amount of time left in the sport.

As fighters they are pretty much equal. Mosley struggles with a good jabber that can dictate range, not let him tee off in the mid range that he so loves. Marquez is not entirely comfortable leading off. Both are excellent at what they do best, Mosley is a great athlete and aggressive toe to toe slugger, Marquez is a classical counterpuncher.

Call it a draw.

 

yes but still.. career-wise, Mosley still pips him...

however if Marquez wins that title @ 140. I have him ahead of Mosley (and possibly ahead of Barrera & Morales, depends who he beats @ 140).

If he wins that title at 147 though, like i said, he has a strong case for being ahead of De La Hoya in the t5 'best careers of this generation'.
Again, he'd be at Pacquiao's heels.. with the only clear things keeping Manny ahead of Marquez being a trilogy-win over Morales (yes, Marquez could've done it... prime-for-prime, in a thrilling trilogy.. but he didn't... Morales didn't give Marquez a shot.. hell, no-one did at the time!) & the fact that Manny won titles at like 122 & flyweight...!

Ofcourse a victory over Floyd Mayweather is hugely pivotal for both Pacquiao & Marquez

 

it's close but mosley is ahead atm. shane has better wins than jmm imo. they're not yet finished in their carrer though so it's subject to change.

 

I would put Shane ahead for a bit, but if you take care of what shane used(PED), then I dont know what to think, how many spots would that matter in an ATG list? Or since when did he start to use them?

Anyhow, once Marquez wins a title @ 140, he surpasses Mosley in my eyes.
Then a 147-lb title.. giving him a very good case for being ahead of De La Hoya & Hopkins.

 

Shane Mosley is the greater fighter, he fought and beat the better fighters and more consistently. It took Marquez a long time to get the recognition he deserved, and that is going to cost him on an all time great scale. If he would have been in that mix along with Barrera in his prime, Morales, Hamed ect and actually beat those fighters then, then you could make a case for him being ranked higher than Mosley but it didn't happen. I didn't check the 'ask me after the Mayweather fight' option because hes not beating Mayweather.
