BTW I reckon he probably deserved the decision over David Diaz. Who else is with me ?

100%. I have inleded this in my original post. He was robbed of being mexico's first 4 weight world champ.

I think he edged Diaz in a close fight.
If I remember correctly the judges scored the first round 10-9 to Morales even with the kd (which was fair enough) but then scored the second round 10-8 to Diaz with no kd (which wasn't so fair).
A real shame - being the first Mexican 4-weight champion would have been the perfect end to his career.

Yeah agree with you there, he was not jobbed but he deffo won imo.

People say that Morales lacked discipline. That is true but i also think that one of the main reasons he got in shoot outs was because his ring craft was not that great, he could be trapped on the ropes and he did not use the ring intelligently......so when he tried to Box, he would always revert back to type when he got hit or pinned against the ropes etc.

I honestly think he could of won all 3 Barrera fights, if he had kept the fight in the centre of the ring like he did for the majority of the second fight. He kept getting trapped on the ropes by Barrera though. I put that down to not being able to command/use the ring intelligently enough.

Yeah your spot on there. If he became first mexican to be 4 weight world champ i think he would no doubt gone down as the greatest mexican.

He definately could have won all three. Its not that he has no ring i.q but the discipline to move away without engaging in a brawl was alien to him. I really love how he used to flurry off the ropes. He COULD NOT stick to a
game plan. Not because he lacked focus but had way too much pride.

    Excellent post :good

Everything you said, I agree & have thought this for ages, he was the best in his time... an entertaining technical warrior.

Now watch some dickhead come post something negative, it always happens at one point.

Barrera was the slightly better prizefighter, but Morales left it all in the ring every time out. Great fighter.

Thanks!!!! Im glad you enjoyed my post. I can tell you actuallly read it as opposed to some people who clearly have not and just make negative comments based on the title thread. I had seen many of his fights but after rewatching them i did't quite realise how great he was. Fighters like him only come around once in a while. His accuracy was deadly, never ssen someone land at will in the super bantamweight division.

perhaps i worded this wrong. I meant in the sense he was not just a warrior, he had skills when backed up to counterpunch and fight his way out through timing and precision.

I appreciate Erik Morales, but we still need to talk about him with perspective in mind. He was easy to hit, and often made hard work of opposition he should have been dealing with relatively easy. I thought he lost to Marco at his most effective weight during his prime, and the Diaz fight was close..not a "robbery".

Good post mate, enjoyed reading it. You're not going to get many who disagree with you - Morales is one of the most revered fighters here on ESB and one of the most loved fighters in the world

Erik is my 2nd favourite fighter of all time (after Ali), he never lost in his prime IMO, tho I scored the 1st Espadas fight even & the 1st MAB fight could have gone to Barrera but I scored 7 rds for Erik... I scored the 2nd fight EASILY for Morales & the 3rd fight dead even.

The man was like a cross between Mayweather & Gatti, beautiful long range boxing skills & a warriors heart just to confuse things

His performances vs Ayala & Hernandez were also excellent, in fact the only performance were he wasnt `Morales like` was vs Raheem... but he was all done by then.

That Diaz fight was tragic... the man deserved that win to top off a fabulous career... fat ******ed ***** judges make me sick at times.

    Viva Morales :good
