Joe Calzaghe looks like an ordinary fighter. First off let me start by saying im not a Joe fan but i would like to pin point and get people's opinions on what Calzaghe does well that makes him so successful without looking spectacular. To me he LOOKS ordinary but he obviously does a lot of things right otherwise he would not still of been undefeated and beaten good fighters. 1 Calzaghe has a phenominal workrate. I think this is his main asset. 2 Cazlaghe has good balance 3 Calzaghe can fight inside and outside. 4 Calzaghe is an excellent Boxer, WHEN he gets into a rythm. 5 He pity patters to disorganize the opponent and he moves around them to mount another attack to attack them from another angle. Flaws Calzaghe however looks garbage when he cannot get into a rythm Bika,Hopkins, and he gets wide and square when he lets both hands go. His workrate IS his defence, he is open to any kind of right hand whether it be a straight right or a right hook.
If his punches are so ineffective how is this so? It's because he's also has amazing defensive reflexes. Also, even though Calzaghe throws pity-pat punches he throws them from all angles and then mixes in a very effective hard straight left. Not to mention he also does good body work.
Aside from his choices in opposition, I've never had a problem with JC. He was actually a pretty damn good fighter. Now, the way he tried to make an ass out of RJJ kinda pissed me off, but that was about it.
He does not have amazing defensive reflexes. I can give you at least 3 occasions where he has been caught solidly and cleanly. His workrate disorganizes his opponents. Especially guys like Kessler who has not idea how to parry and shoot or slip/roll and come back with a counter. Kessler glues his hands to the side of his head like a battered women and goes back in straight lines, that is why he got so disorganized when Calzaghe attacked him. Lacy also has no clue how to protect himself under a barrage of punches. You see how effective Hopkins was under Cazlaghe's barrages ? Calzaghe struggled to land anything significent because Hopkins knows how to slip/roll and shoot, he stays composed under attacks.
Looking back at Joe's career I think that was his best asset.. the fact that everyone always just seen him as an ordinary fighter. (But in the ring, He defo showed his craft)
His reflexes must have been pretty good, because he spent a lot of time with both hands down by his waist and not getting hit in the process.
Where his reflexes good when he was getting hit by Kessler's uppercut,Jones uppercut,Hopkins right hand,Eubank's right hand,Reid's right hand, Byron Mitchell ? Kessler did not just hit him, he landed his punch about 3/4 inches behind his head, that is getting hit solidly.
Calzaghe's best asset was his brain. Whenever Calzaghe was having difficulty with an opponent, he recognized it and adapted. The only other current fighter that I've seen that has that ability to the same degree is Hopkins. And Calzaghe out-adapted Hopkins. Also, Calzaghe had excellent footwork and used distance and angles brilliantly.
I didn't say he had perfect reflexes just amazing ones. Not too many fighters can keep their hands down by their waist and duck and dodge and still parry the way he did.
