In the Bernando Mercado vein, how about Roy Williams?

Good one..I was going to say Jaffa Ballogou but I just found he challenged Liles for the title. Should have remembered that one.

What about Jimmy Thunder or Curtis Sheppard?

Technically Satterfield never challenged for a title...surely he would be up there.

Scar Tissue! YOU MADE MY NIGHT with these picks! How bout I throw a couple more out there.....Elmer Ray, Lee Q Murray, and Clarence Henry. Ray Arcel called Lee Q Murray the best puncher of the 1940s next to Joe Louis.

    Sam McVey

Undubtedly the hardest punching HW to never fight for the title, imo.

What is it with punchers from Mobile?

Godfrey was from there wasnt he? Byron Mitchell was from somewhere near there.

Thunder challenged for tons of minor titles if you count those.

I considered him but then I thought..well he did own the coloured title for a while..wasnt to sure whether to include him or not.

I wasnt going to but I mean I didnt include McVey because he was the "coloured" champion for some time.

But really considering how easy it was to get a piece of the title in Thunder's age compared to McVey's where there was only one real title and racism prevented him from every challenging for it I wasnt really going to consider those little trinket shots legit.

I don't think Bob Satterfield ever got a shot.
