Barrera/Chavez used to really mark up their opponents....was this a reason?

 

if roach really beleived this then he wouldnt of wanted the khan v barrera fight so badly

I think a lot of all the "Illigal wraps" before the fights is one of the ways the trainers use to get under the opponents and the teams skin.
I think the "only" really case of illegal hand wraping,could be the one with Antonio Margarito before the Mosley fight.
But Freddy Roach said in an interview that he several times had told the commision that his fighters opponent,was wearing illegal handwraping,allmost to get under the skin of the opponent.(i think it was the fight with ODLH and MAY,not sure thou).
But it´s got a lot of attention right now,mainly because of the Margarito "wrap".
So i think they have it under control now...

 

Freddie complained about the tape Oscar was using........which was a packing tape that was very hard in his opinion. When the commission said it was ok, he said ok I will use the same thing to tape Manny's hands.........but I dont think he did.


Sure its a way to get under a fighters skin. Butch Lewis tells a great story of pulling the same thing on Mike Tyson before the Spinks fight. He said that while Kevin Rooney was arguing with him he looked over kevins shoulder and Mike glanced at him and Then punched a 6" hole in a 1" thick Concrete wall.....(they had a pic of this in Sports illustrated if i remember right) and Butch said he walked away and went back to spinks dressing room........Spinks asked him if he got Tyson off his game and Butch said yes........then walked in the back room and cried because he knew Tyson was going to kill him! LMAO!

Nothing funnier than Butch Lewis saying "the man was punching holes in the wall and my man has to go get in a ring with him?"

I remember the pic of the concrete missing in the sports illustrated article about the fight, so probably the issue that came out a week after the fight. You could see the street from the hole!

I am trying to remember what special it was when Butch is telling this story. It has been a few years since I saw it. I tried a search on youtube and came up empty. I will keep looking!

not quite the whole story, the commission did in fact tell DLH to change his hand wraps, though only in a minor way:

De La Hoya’s tape man, Joe Chavez, uses two-inch-wide brown medical tape around his fighter’s hands and then rolls up the tape between the fingers to help cushion what the De La Hoya camp describes as sensitive hands.

Roach [...] complained the rolled-up portion leaves a ridge atop De La Hoya’s fingers that could cut Pacquiao’s face.

With athletic commission Executive Officer Keith Kizer presiding over an impromptu meeting at the MGM Grand, chief inspector Tony Lazo and his assistant Alex Ybarra determined De La Hoya’s brown tape was allowed, but they also ruled that Chavez has to cut the tape in half to one inch when he rolls it up between the fingers.
“Tapegate,” De La Hoya’s business partner Richard Schaefer cracked before the ruling was made. Roach had said, “Oscar wraps illegally, and I’m going to do whatever it takes to win.”
Kizer told Lazo to ensure the between-finger tape doesn’t protrude at Saturday’s pre-fight taping, which Roach can supervise. “If it looks like a ridge, re-do it,” Kizer instructed Chavez.
Later, Chavez assured his method “was not meant to hit harder, but to protect the hand.”
And with that episode over, Roach coyly nodded to the suggestion that his protest would irritate De La Hoya.
“That’s what I’m here for,” Roach said.
