I'm pretty sure it used to in boxing - at which point did PPV numbers trump status of fighter as primary reason for the bigger purse?
Won't take this any serious yet, waiting for Mayweather/Marquez. All real answers will come after that, right now it's just rumors and trash talks to hype it up some more.
The status of a boxer is a primary function of his earning power. The more money a fighter brings in, the more he can command. It's always been that way.
By "status" I meant "ability". And PPV/viewing figures are not always correlative to ability. In the past, fights used to get done, negotiations would sometimes be tricky, but generally speaking the split wouldn't be the issue - it would be the location or other issues. It would be 50/50 or 40/40 with 20 to the winner, or something along those lines. Fighters are picky *******s nowadays.
If you define status by ability, then Floyd has a case there as well. Anyway, there is a lot of money involved in these fights; many different ways for revenue to be generated. Naturally, the more money involved in a fight, the more diffucult negotiations are.
Floyd has no case in the purse split ..World wide Manny has a much larger following ..Floyd knows what his fight with Oscar did for his drawing power Manny is in the same boat !! If a purse split prevenst this fight from happeneing I will lose all respect for this sport !! I will still have a passion for it but no respect !
I hate to say it, but Floyd's in the better negotiating position here: - Floyd drew better against Hatton and De La Hoya than Pac did, and likely will draw better against Marquez than Pac did. - Floyd has expressed interest in fighting about 4 or 5 people, so he's painted a picture that he has options. All of those 4 or 5 would be big money fights. - Manny says he only wants the Mayweather-Marquez winner, or at the very least doesn't want Cotto or Mosley, so he's backed into a corner. Outside of Mosley, Cotto and the Mayweather-Marquez winner, there really aren't any other huge money fights available to Pacquaio. Pac stands to make much less, relatively, by taking a fight against Valero than Mayweather does by taking a fight against Mosley. - Arum's been trying to pump up Pac's revenue numbers, and was completely embarrassed when the actual numbers ended up being a fraction of what he announced. Neither guy wants to lose and take a hit on their marketability. Mayweather has other options that people want to see where he has less of a chance of losing that zhiny zero. Pac is going to want a 50/50 split on principle, and Mayweather is going to want 51% on principle. I wouldn't be surprised at all if both of them have to take another fight or two with other people before they get to a point where they need to face each other.
Well ****. I guess Floyds an ******* for giving JMM a chance. If JMM is small then so is pick and Floyd shouldn't fight Pac because he is smaller.
I'm aware what 'generally' means, and I'm not talking about me and a few of my friends when I say that Boxing fans are not generally older than MMA fans. I'm talking about everyone in general. There are more young fans who follow Boxing than MMA.... and WAY more older fans that do aswell.
You're crazy if you don't believe boxing fans are generally older than MMA fans. There isn't much dispute here on this one.
