Braehmer and Garay are both Universum fighters. I'm sure Universum would have preferred that Braehmer had won, since he's the more marketable of the two, but the Universum matchmakers seldom make dangerous non-mandatory fights unless they can keep a belt in the family. Kotelnik-Khan seems to be the one notable exception, as was the fact they were scheduling Dzinziruk-Kirkland.

If Dawson beats Johnson he should Tavoris Cloud to retain his IBF title.

To be honest man, it was only a matter of time before it happened. Cloud's been the mandatory for about a year now, but without a network to pick the fight up, Dawson has no financial incentive to fight him. Cloud deserves his chance, but at the same point in time, he also hasn't fought in 10 months, presumably because he doesn't want to risk his mandatory standing. That hurt his chances for a Dawson fight because you don't continue gaining career momentum and exposure for yourself by taking that much time off. Especially as a young contender trying to make the break through to stardom.

I think Chad knew this was coming, and that's when the buzz of him dropping to 168 happened. If Dawson goes to 168, I think it's a blessing in disguise for him as the fighters there are more well known than Cloud is and Chad will get more credit, and money, for fighting them.

Ok, i think that its cool that an organization is following their own rules. But surely it doesn't make sense for him to be loosing the belt to fight the fight that people want to see.

Whats at fault here? IBF's rankings?

Who cares about the promoters, about dangerous non-mandos,etc,as long as the fight was good, the match-up aswell it shouldn't matter.
It's not like Garay isn't looking for the best fights.

what i want to know now is 1 if dawson does beat johnson again wouldnt that make him the mandatory for the wbc? also my 2 for ibf saying tarver was like voluntary was the ibf strap in the rematch clause if so how is that voluntary?
im a huge dawson most no but after this fight if wins i wish he would go ahead and fight the likes of cloud and diacono if stays at 175 due to that these guys are trying to claim his spot. why not make em fight for it cause at 175 who the name next?

The point is that his promoter makes his fights for him. There are only three times when Universum fighters take on dangerous opponents (and there's a LONG history of this, with some but not many exceptions):

    1) The opponent is a mandatory
    2) The fight is for a belt or a title eliminator, and the fighter doesn't have a belt
    3) Both fighters are represented by Universum

Let me rattle off the names of some Universum fighters for you: Sturm, Erdei, Dzinziruk, Garay, Kotelnik, Michalczewski, Chagaev. Notice any pattern here?

Basically, if it falls into the normal Universum pattern, I can't give Garay too much credit for it. Until Garay actually fights someone outside of this realm, there's very little evidence that he's looking to make the best fights.

Basically, yes. Cloud is the mandatory, Johnson is #3. Apparently Dawson/Johnson isn't "the LHW" fight to them.

This is a bold, bold call by Dawson/Shaw. I'm sure he has HBO's assurance that they'll take Johnson, but what happens after that? Even if he wins, he's now standing with no belt and no incentive for anyone to fight him other than, presumably, HBO's backing.

What would be interesting to know is if he has a multi fight guarentee from HBO. I assume he must. My best guess is that HBO said they'd back him to take big name fights at 168 as, other than Dianconu, there wouldn't seem to be anything at 175 beyond Johnson.

To be fair all he needs really is HBO's backing. That's the golden goose for any LHW out there. None of them are good enough or well known enough to really get themselves out there on a bigger level, so if one guy has the support of HBO they'll come running to the table.

One of the things I FIGURE HBO will try to discuss with Dawson is RJJ. If RJJ is willing to fight on basic cable and not PPV, chances are HBO would be willing to pit Dawson against RJJ in a showcase for Dawson. Roy of course (if he's as hard up for money as they say) would probably jump at the opportunity assuming he isn't KO'd by Lacy.

lol he can get any belt back if he beats Johnson. He can fight the winner of Cloud/Woods if he beats Johnson or even fight Diaconu for the WBC title.

Cloud will make a name himself if he beats Woods and because of this fiasco.

Question is does Showtime pick up Cloud vs Woods? I mean Dawson is HBO property now for all intents and purposes. Does that mean Showtime should pick up Cloud as a replacement?
