Since Manny and Ricky fought for the IBO 140 pound championship, then you have to recognize Hearns winning the IBO title against Nate Miller in 1999. That makes Hearns a 7 time champion in 6 divisions.
I don't have time to respond to all of it, I have an essay due tomorrow morning and I'm getting distracted on here. But this point stood out to me: Yes, Benitez lost to some **** fighters. That is all. I'll refute the rest after I've done this!
lineal title? who cares man! When you cherrypick you can cherrypick all the washed up lineal titlist and say you are the lineal champion and truth be told all you beat are Diaz and Hatton and not Chavez and Pryor. I know this was not directed at me but I answered it.
Well when Benitez fought Hearns he had only one loss and that was to Sugar Ray Leonard, and his last win before fighting Hearns was an outclassing of Duran and this was for the same title Hearns won from Benitez. Duran incidentally won 2 more titles after losing to Benitez. One at the same weight he lost to Benitez and then another one 7 years later at middleweight.
I think they should have a picture of Benitez with the 4 other guys in my avatar. But he did not fight Hagler and everyone else fought Marvin and each other, so I guess that is why the 4 are on there, but Benitez belonged as the fabulous fifth legend of the 1980s. Incidentally, Hearns fought all the legends of the 80s. Cueves,Benitez,Leonard,Duran,Hagler. All of them were champions when Hearns fought them. That means something. There was no catchweight then, he fought them all at their best and where they won their titles.
my point in all this is that I am a Pacman fan. But when Pacman is rated over Hearns I have to argue in favor of the truth who is greater. If you ask me who is greater Pacman or Floyd or Pacman or Klithcko I will say Pacman. But I cannot rate him over Thomas Hearns.
is it possible that people think they are comparing Manny to Ricky Hatton? If people knew it was Thomas Hearns then Hearns would be winning with 90 percent of the vote.
good post. It is hard to rate a fighter against another weight and era fighter, although I do think Hearns era was a little tougher.
Duran won the 154 pound title and then some say he did well against Hagler for the 160 pound title. That is not a washed up guy. Duran gets credit for beating Davey Moore in June of 1983 and for going the distance with Marvin. So naturally he was still a champion when he fought Hearns in June of 1984-and Duran still was a champ when he fought Hearns but was stripped once that fight occured because of not fighting McCallum who was the number one contender. Duran always had the same problem fighting in 1980 or 1984 or 1995. His footwork was lumbering and slow when he was trying to cut the ring off. He did not do well fighting guys who were moving around. If a guy fought him on the inside he would do great. He might have beaten Tyson he was so good at inside fighting, but a fast guy he could not beat . And Hearns was fast and powerful. Too much.
