Of all the factors involved in Kelly Pavliks new deal with Top Rank money, promotion, security one stood out above all: loyalty. I was brought up the right way, said Pavlik, who was set to become a free agent in May 2010. Ive been with Top Rank for going on 10 years now and weve had a good working relationship. I wanted to give them the first chance in negotiations and they came back with a good offer. Neither Pavlik nor Top Rank chairman Bob Arum disclosed particulars of the new deal, mainly because many details havent been ironed out. But it is expected to replace his current deal which Pavlik signed in 2005 before his rise to fame and extend at least until 2011. As arguably one of the top five fighters in boxing, Pavlik would have had plenty of suitors had he decided to ride out his old deal and become a free agent. But Pavlik has been with Top Rank since turning pro in 2000 and wasnt in a rush to make a change. Im at a point in my career when I want to make the right deal, Pavlik said. Weve always had a good working relationship. There havent been any hiccups and weve seen eye-to-eye and thats rare in boxing. Its a multi-year deal and everyone is happy, added Arum, speaking by phone from Tampa, Fla. Now Im turning my attention to rescheduling the [Sergio] Mora fight. Pavlik, the WBC and WBO middleweight champion, was scheduled to fight Mora on June 27 in Atlantic City, but the fight was postponed for mysterious reasons. Arum said it was because of a staph infection Pavlik suffered in one of his hands following his February bout against Marco Antonio Rubio. Pavlik, however, said the cut had long since healed and insisted he was healthy enough to fight. Regardless, neither party seemed interested in rehashing the details on Thursday and both sides are eager to see Pavlik back in the ring. Im glad they kissed and made up, said Pavliks father and co-manager, Mike Pavlik Sr. Kellys always been a loyal dog and its just good that things worked out. Hell probably retire through Top Rank. Arum said he will spend this week trying to hash out details for a September Pavlik-Mora fight, possibly in Atlantic City. Were not under any legal obligation to do so, but morally they should get the first chance if they want the fight, Arum said of the city. The 27-year-old Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) is coming off a knockout victory over Rubio and is facing his longest layoff in years. If he fights in September, the seventh-month break will be his longest since 2006, when he fought Bronco McKart in July after a nearly 10-month break. Since then, hes been one of boxings busiest big-name fighters, with eight bouts over a 21Ñ2-year span. Pavlik Sr. said his son is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. Hes been fighting nine years now, he said. People dont realize that. They think hes just now bursting on the scene. The layoff has kept Pavlik out of the spotlight but a win over Mora could be a precursor to a huge bout with IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham in December or January. Pavlik said hes ready to get back in the ring. Im really ready to get back to training, he said. I want to get back in the swing of things. "Sigh"
How so, sir? Are you saying another Company would Not have been patient with Pavlik's progress and thrown him in "too soon" with the wolves? OR Is it something else? BTW, I do agree with you (I think), and it's also why Pavlik would stay with Arum so long as all is good.
No ****!!:dead One would think Arum would have caught on to the fact that NO ONE other than V. Gottschalk wants to see this fight. AND it seemed the whole "infected hand" thing was a way out of it. Atleast the bottom of that article mentions AA in December....I guess.
On the one hand you can't really blame Kelly for sticking with Top Rank. They brought him up the right way, and never missed a beat. You can't really count the Hopkins fight as Arum's mistake. I'm sure Arum would have post poned that had he known about Pavlik's real condition going in. That one is on Kelly. He's the one who would not listen to anyone. KP is the middleweight champion of the world, and on his way to becoming a wealthy man. Can't fault him for sticking with what worked. On the other hand, I was hoping KP would slip through Arum's crooked, slimy fingers. Moving to Golden Boy might have been a smart move.
well if kelly feels comfortable w/ top rank and is satisfied w/ his career arc so far then so be it and good for him... i just hope he takes a greater role in who he fights than it appears he does from where the fan sits...hopefully he has arum's ear enough to make the mora fight go away...
Mora again? You gotta be kidding me. Like Pavlik needs til Sept to be ready for him. He could probably fight him in July-August and still fight AA by Dec/Jan. I KNOW Pavlik has to be aware that his star status is fading a bit as of late, especially with no AA fight lined up.
Pavlik WANTED the summer off. His wife just gave birth to their 2nd child; a son. When the 1st kid was born Kelly was going non-stop. He just wants to spend some time with his wife and kids.
And I respect that. But he IS a boxer who makes his money by boxing. Look at the military, the soldiers don't WANT to go to Iraq and Afghanistan, but that's the job, so the family life takes a hit. Same with Pavlik, he's not getting any younger, he's got to fight while he's still "got it". I just think a 7 month layoff is a bit excessive.
Arum spat on a 4 mil dollar offer for Margo from Williams and took a lesser offer for Mosley. I'd say that ain't happenin.
