I think I only saw like two punches land semi clearly from Pacquiao in that round and one semi-clear body shot and the big right hand from Marquez. The low volume of punches that actually connected landed on gloves or were half blocked. I know you want to steer it for Pacquiao but Compubox never tells the story Asero.

Very tough round to score, I actually gave it to Marquez, but I have no problem whatsoever with it being called even or a Pacquiao round.

WOW. According to compubox stats Pacquiao dominated the round.

:lol::lol::lol:Have you not paid attention to scoring in boxing at the Olympics?
Scoring in Olympic boxing has become a complete joke, as they let punchstat which is just as good as a flip of the coin, decide the winner!:nut:nut:nut

I think the difference is in the knockdown in the 3rd round. It was close throughout although the 1st round goes to Pac for landing more shots.

LOL...I guess somebody slipped a $20 to Iole...

My only regret about any of the rounds I scored was the first. I thought Pacquiao won most of the round, but I gave it to Marquez on the basis of a hard right hand he landed in the final 20 seconds of the round. There were no punches of consequence in Round 1. Given that so much emphasis in pro boxing is on the power of the punches, I switched and give Marquez the round instead of Pacquiao. In hindsight, it was probably a mistake.

    The "hard right hand"???

They have no benefit of instant replays, they call it as they see it when it happens, so I respect what they do. I enjoyed Ron Borge's take on the fight, funny he thought it was a robbery and insinuates that they gave 1st round to Pac, when he scored it 114-113 for JMM...

My Sweet Science card was the reverse of Miller’s, tipping toward Marquez 114-113 in points and 7-5 in rounds. Twice in the days leading up to the fight I watched Marquez-Pacquiao I. Both times my card came out 113-112 Marquez in points and 8-4 in rounds, same as it was four years earlier at ringside. So it goes in boxing but Saturday night’s decision was, to me, a reminder of how difficult it is to win a close decision these days if your opponent is the larger name on the marquee.

All three judges gave the first round to Pacquiao Saturday night, a round that seemed to me to be as significant as the third, when Marquez was knocked down. I did not give Pacquiao that round. Neither did two of boxing’s best ringside observers, ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael and Yahoo.com’s Kevin Iole. Yet somehow it seems automatic these days that the first round on the judges’ cards goes to the fighter who produces the most revenue, as it once supposedly went to the champion unless the challenger had a clear edge.

Good post, and it goes to show like I said earlier, if the roles were reversed and it was Pacquiao doing the exact same work that JMM did in that round.....there is no doubt in my mind that every official judge on the panel would have scored for the bigger name in Pacquiao.....

.....it clearly shows us that a fighter of JMM's stature has a higher burden of proof to the eyes of the judges, and that goes for every round not just the first.

Sadly, it will be the same way in the Mayweather fight, as the non-boxing savy media is already salivating for such a matchup.

Agree... -- that's why I gave it Marquez.

It's really that simple. Marquez landed the only real clean, HARD & effective shot of the round.

Unless you count Pacquiao's straight-left in the opening 20s as something major (it was light!... esp. by Manny's standards, but obviously registers as a power-punch).

(not talking directly to you, but just branching off from that)

Punchstats can be deceptive. Look at the round, nothing was really notable EXCEPT marquez's straight right-hand.

The punchstats overall for the fight show Marquez being quite a bit more accurate but Manny throwing maybe 10 more a round, iirc... but if you look at the whole fight... other than the knockdown and mostly a few other straight lefts... all the other major GOOD, power-punches.. the better ones... were landed by Marquez.

It is a contest of who punches more or hits harder.
    It's Boxing.
It was close but clear in my eyes.
Marquez won enough rounds... & landed the more effective punches!

when I was a casual fan, naive, ignroant... and young(er) <much younger, in fact!> kid... this is the kind of round I would have immediately given Pacquiao due to not paying close attention to the punches (noting that most were misled & against the gloves) & how effective they are... (choosing rather to, in cases like this, to gift the aggressor & person who throws more.. the round!).

    EFFECTIVE PUNCHING. key-term.

That's the difference between the Amateurs & the Pros!
