Willie Limond was crowned WBU world lightweight champion last night - but it was a hollow victory.

The Glasgow boxer was the judges' unanimous choice as he out-fought, out-thought and out-manouvered English opponent Ryan Barrett.

But there was little excitement for the 600 or so fans attracted to Glasgow's Thistle Hotel for the wine-and-dine show.

Limond concentrated on the positives after his win and said: "I want to defend my title at Firhill because I'm a Partick Thistle fan and it feels brilliant to be world champion. I'll take on anybody."

The WBU title might be some way down boxing's food chain but it was once the property of Ricky Hatton and he didn't do too badly after using it as his stepping stone to a life-changing career.

Limond is the wrong side of 30, a joiner to trade and a budding boxing promoter.

He wanted the glamour of a world crown to add to the cv of a journeyman of distinction and prolong his pro career.

Uneventful

Limond answered the call of a home crowd who demanded he take the fight to his opponent from the first bell.

The problem he has is that early dispatches are not part of his armoury and every fight he has turns into a war of attrition.

Barrett, a Londoner as tall as Big Ben, swung his left hook with the resolve of a man who knew one of them might connect and end the contest prematurely.

It was turgid, uneventful stuff over the early rounds and out of keeping with a contest with a world title at stake.

There will have been more engrossing Friday night contests in nearby Sauchiehall Street.

The inability of either fighter to carry the threat totheother man meant a long journey towards midnight for the fans, who were at least able to digest their meal without the incon-veniencof being brought to their feet at regular intervals.

There was nothing happening in the ring that would have affected the digestive system. It was professional sleep walking with a title on offer for the last man standing.

The only distinguishing characteristic between the fighters was Limond possessed an aggressive streak while being minus a punch to provide the finishing touch.

It still looked as if it might take heat exhaustion induced by the ring lights and the claustrophobic atmosphere of the venue to dismantle Barrett by default.

It was a merciful release when referee Victor Loughln brought the contest to an end.

The deliberation of the judges was an inevitability. Barrett had turned out to be the the first Chelsea fan accused of being a conscientious objector and his punishment was to be declared runner-up in an uninspiring two-horse race.

And Limond was the world champ in a very limited world.

Excellent stuff, i'd like Willie to get a big name now Billy. I'm sure you guys want it and I feel Willie needs it. He's better then this WBU bollocks. Title aside it was a very decent domestic win Barrets a good little fighter.

 

While I don't have the hostility toward Limond that some on here do, it doesn't sound very good. Wins a fringe title that's on the way out, vs I believe an early Khan victim. Obviouisly he's just doing his best to make a living but with him being new to promoting he will get no favours and these type of fights seem to be below the level that Sky Friday Fight Nights are serving up (or at least, no better).
