was it ever rated? i have never seen a good ko by him, usually the koes are just the guy not knowing where he is coming from covering up asnd getting caught by a uppercut. he is a good boxer no doubt but he looks gash agaisnt warango
we can say all we want but berto has a title to keep and a future to hold...he wont fight those guys...
Berto is definitely still a work in progress. Problem is he's at that point where he can't be treated like a work a progress anymore. He's already being pushed as a member of the four horseman at WW (Floyd, Mosley, Cotto and Berto). At this point, the kid gloves have to come off of him.
Berto early on had the "one punch KO" power lable thrown on him. Then he struggled to knock out guys who he normally should've been able to put away...recently though, you can tell a lot of his power was hyperbole.
exactly, he's hyped and placed in the company of elite but is nowhere near they're level and probably never will be. every division needs titleholders though and that's where berto's potential ends
He's not ready for a Mosley or PBF but I wouldn't be afraid to put him in with Cotto when he steps up to that level, especially if Clottey stops Cotto! :rasta
Berto stopped being a work in progress when he reached up and got the belt, I"m sick of HBO and his supporters covering for his weak ass. The man a full fledge champion in the 147 division, and he has fought nothing but JR. WW.
That's a good way to sum it up man. It was a one-sided fight, but it's not good to continue to give your opponent a chance to score and punish you like that, repeatedly. The best thing the ref could've done was punish him with a deduction for it, because the only time Iron Shoes could score was when Berto made himself available by basically flopping on him for 10 seconds a clip. It's frustrating because he could've easily chosen to keep it at a distance and minimize the shots he'd have taken and look better in the process. When he kept it at a distance, he looked great. Damned good. But he fought half the fight with the common sense of peanut brittle. It was a chance for him to make the top dogs of the division notice him, and he did very well overall....but was it enough to MAKE them notice Berto?
Berto punches hard, but doesn't have really really strong KO power. It's very clear he hits hard, but he doesn't sit on his power shots quite right.
Wow, that was some of the most obviously stacked reffing and commentating I've seen in a while. Berto wasn't only boring, he held and ran around and even -- as Harold noted -- flicked with the back of his glove, an illegal blow. Yet the ref never takes a point for holding, never even breaks them up. He basically scowls and warns Berto but lets him do what he wants. Meanwhile, the three stooges at ringside can think of enough superlatives to heap on their burgeoning cash cow. At one point Lennox actually said: "Berto is showing a lot of strength in the way he'd holding." !!!! Yes, Lennox: Berto is a world-class holder. And a bore.
Cotto vs Berto at this point is simple. If Berto uses his speed he wins, if Cotto is able to hit him to the body as often as Warango (his new official name) was it's an easy fight for Cotto. Some fights are complex. This one isn't. I'd hitch my wagons to Cotto to the body more than Berto fighting smart consistently over 12 rounds.
With the guys available in the division Berto's loss is coming soon. Don't think he was ever considered a big puncher for people to be shocked today.
Berto should have gone to a high school prom if he wanted to hold "all night long". The ref should have taken some points as well. Berto will be losing his "0" very soon.
True, but I don't think Berto would fight the same way against Cotto. Cotto doesn't exactly have wonderful ring intelligence either. Not saying I think Berto beats him right now, but of the elites that would be his best chance right now.
