Any number of the Great White Hopes saving white America from the evil, terrifying negro menace that was Jack Johnson?

Don Curry in the 80's, being favored P4P over some of the Fab Four before his career had even really taken off?

Zab Judah being called "Pernell Whitaker with power"?

 

Joe Mesi...

 

Who expected what from Mesi?

 

Cooney vs Holmes.

 

Greg Page as the next Ali.

 

Aside from Breland in NY, one or two other Golden Glovers were gonna be the next SRR: Johnny Saxon 'n Howard Davis, Jr., plus a 16-year-old mountain-a-muscle middleweight, Alex Ramos -- with dynamite in both hands -- looked like a sure-fire pro superstar.

 

I was kinda on the Judah train...when he was coming up he was a fighter that really wowed me..I think only Guzman at 122 has done that since but Im probably a little more cynical and worldly now than I was then...I dont just go "Wow a blue car" anymore..I really need to see said fighter in a variety of situations and in with a decent level of opponant before I am sold.

Howard Davis to a degree...he was the most exceptional fighter out of those Olympics many thought.

Recently...Mijares, Bojado, Lee...Im not sure if universally they have that expectation on them but you get guys like Manny Stewart spewing verbal poop about them and enough people listen to get a hype train chugging along...People are looking for that next Robinson in their own era and guys like Manny look to cash in on that by claiming their own fighters are just that...does them more harm then good.

 

Back in the day, the expectations seem to have been damn high on Kid Chocolate. Even achieving what he did in his career seemed like a shortfalling to many people.

I always thought JC Chavez being expected to go up yet another weight class and topple Whitaker was pretty unfair expectations.

 

Only one ****ing moron ever called him that.

 

I remember Ramos getting hyped to the freaking moon. He got beat buy a journeyman, and then to make matters worse, so to speak, he lost to Murray Sutherland. Sutherland was like a truth seeker. He'd find out if a guy was the real deal or not.

 

Mid career i think of Tyson. For quite a while so many expected him to be the greatest Heavyweight (possibly boxer full stop) to ever don a glove.

 

yeah the expectations on zab were pretty massive.. i also heard get called the next sugar ray leonard

 

Who's that? I remember a decent poster on here mentioning that's what people THOUGHT he was going to become, and I doubt he was quoting that person.

 

Sutherland is a bit better than a journyman he was the first ever SMW champion for all tahts worth and hes scottish so he has to be great.

i think this Guillermo Rigondeaux has a big mantle to live up to hes been hailed as the new sweet pea and hyped to hell but is 29 years old and has management issues taht could delay his career and all this is just after his first fight
