    QFT.

I've never believed the fix was in, but this whole fight simply stinks.

Why would the put a substance on Liston's glove to blind Clay and then give him a pass? I don't get what this insinuation is aiming at. It was a known and oft repeated fact that Liston applied foreign substances.

Bizarre fight all the way through.

Liston did look like he was genuinely trying earlier, but did seem a bit slow to take advantage of Ali's "helpless" state. I suppose it could simply have been that he was showing too much respect for Ali's power after having been rocked by him a few times earlier.

Still, that fight was filled with weird **** all the way through. That's all I can say about it.

I didn't think Liston pulled his punches then, and I don't think he did now, either.

Maybe they were trying to make Ali quit? No idea.

Maybe Sonny's shoulder really was hurt, hence the substance on the gloves but then Sonny couldn't finish him because of a nagging injury.

I re-watched the 4th round again.....and at one point Clay's face does get pushed up close to Sonny's shoulder.

Maybe the liniment salve gets over in Clay's eyes at that point.

Still Liston's people should not be using liniment during the fight.

Liston was rocked a few times earlier in the fight, a novel experience at that point in his career, and so he would have been somewhat cautious.

He had fought for a total of six minutes in the previous three years.

He probably wasn't expecting there to be a fifth round, and therefore wasn't in top shape.

Besides, he did appear to be trying to end things, but was losing energy.

Joe Polino ,Sonny's corner man said they juiced the gloves ,then he threw the jar under the ring.
Liston was out of shape, had negligible ring rounds under his belt and was aging,he tried ,ran out of gas, and said F***K It.

Dundee suggests as much in his book, says they'd heard a rumour of a shoulder injury before the fight, that they were massaging the shoulder between rounds and that that's where iho the substance came from.

Couldn't agree more. I don't have any explanations as to how or why, it just does.
