Hopkins still has a really, really underrated resume, mainly because he's not the flashy, awesome crowd pleaser warrior type of fighter, but someone who's excellence is in his skills, mostly defensive. He doesn't have a large fanbase, hardly got any kind of ATG hype like Roy did, didn't make experts and historians fall in love with him and turn out biased, another thing happened with Roy.

Still, he's ahead of PacMan at the moment, and obviously ahead of Mayweather.

2001: TKOs P4P#2 Tito for undisputed MW championship, serious underdog, performance of the decade, becomes P4P king until Jones-Ruiz
2004: KOs P4P #4 Oscar for all 4 MW belts for first time in history, only clean knockout loss of Oscar
2004: becomes P4P king for 2nd time after Jones-Tarver II
2005: turns 40, still P4P king, makes 21th successful defense
2005: loses 2 debated decisions vs. top MW contender Taylor
2006: 41, schools P4P-er Tarver, serious underdog, picks up The Ring LHW championship
2007: 42, beats P4P#2 Winky
2008: 43, loses close/debated decision to P4P#2 Calzaghe, schools P4P#5, 17 years younger Pavlik

Hopkins' resume keeps getting better and better with time. Still there are many who disrespect his achievements, but you can't argue with his run and performances, which in this decade is clearly stronger than Floyd's or PacMan's, although he suffered 3 (debated) losses, while Floyd remained unbeaten (with debated win over Castillo) and PacMan lost only once (close but not debated UD to Morales), debated fights vs. Juan Manuel Marquez.

PacMan needs Mosley's (WW champion) or Mayweather's (retired P4P king) scalp, but that should be enough if Bernard calls it a day or fights Froch, who is not the same caliber, lol. But fighting Adamek would be different, he's a borderline P4P-er and The Ring CW World Champion, and Hopkins is 44.

even if Pac loses to Floyd, he is still fighter of the decade.

I have a hypothetical question though to ask. Let's say Pacquiao and Mayweather a couple months after the decade ends (you have it 2010, but let's define 00s as 00-09, and say they fight in the spring of 2010). And Mayweather outclasses Pacquiao and beats him in convincing fashion.

On one hand, you can say the fight had nothing to do with the decade, so it should have no bearing on who's the fighter of the 00s. On the other hand, skill-set and talent do have some bearing as well as achievement. When people rank Duran as the fighters of the 70s, it's not solely because he was dominating the lightweights (and Palomino at 147). It's also because he was such a great fighter with top-notch offense and defense. Would a Mayweather win over Pacquiao a couple months into 2010 have a bearing onto the best of the decade since we also are taking into account skill level and talent, and it's unlikely that your abilities are suddenly going to disappear in a couple months?

I'm thinking this because I had suspected at first that a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight would take place late this year, and it would be for all the marbles. P4P rankings, fighter of the 00s, etc...But now I hear Bob Arum trying to promote Pacquiao-Cotto in the winter (maybe it's a negotiating ploy) and Dan Rafael is saying Mayweather-Pacquiao is more likely in early 2010. If Arum keeps it in-house with Top Rank and makes Pacquiao-Cotto and Mayweather keeps fighting GBP fighters and takes on Mosley, then that would still be fine with me.

Provided both Mayweather and Pac win those bouts and face each other in the spring of 2010, does it still apply for the fighter of the decade award if you say the decade ended on December 31, 2009??

I put a great emphasis on the 2 sets of criteria here Resume and Skillset and While Pac might just edge BHOP on Resume Bernards Skillset is superior not to mention the way he has come back from his losses to Taylor and Calzaghe which were all close fights, He annihalates Tarver and Pavlik who were both top 10 pound for pounders at the time.

when dela hoya losses to mosley(dela hoya won over trinidad anyway), it made it clear that the almost 5-year(95-99) p4p king in dela hoya was not really the best fighter of the 1990s...everybody concedes that to jones who only been p4p king for 2 years...early fights in the new decade would really have a bearing

I think Pac is a great fighter and is one of my favourites but im a bit surprised hes running away with this poll i think Bhop will be better appreciated when he retires.

Hard for me to vote man, I like all those guys and have them all as #1. If I'm forced then it's Pacquiao but will leave my vote out of it. Mayweather vs Pacquiao and future fights these guys get involved in should make it easier.
