What's to like about Mundine?

Mundine is not on the same level as Fenech, KT or Vic....nobodys saying that all anybody is saying is that Mundine makes a lot of cash fighting top 5 to 15 fighters and that what he will keep doing.


I thnik he will win a few more vacant or regular WT and then fight Green at LHW when hes has a vacant title

If he fights Pav, Sturm or AA I will be very :yikes

 

I do like the fact he doesn't say typical sporting cliche

you reading to much it to it, he mite go overseas and fight strum or pavlik. he moved to 160 for a reason, so he is fighting smaller people.

Mundine's unquestionably a great all-round athlete, a very handy boxer and unfortunately also an ingracious, dillusional loud-mouth.

He's been a poor man's Ali since he got all excited reading the Ali book on his media-stunt overseas trip between rugby and boxing careers.

Mundine was easily influenced by power and fell hook line and sinker for the Malcolm X stuff and put both feet in his mouth regarding September 11 - something that didn't endear him to the Yanks, and hasn't enhanced his overseas prospects.

The differences between Mundine, or 'The Man', his poor man's rip-off of Ali's 'The Greatest', and Ali himself, couldn't be wider:

Ali talked it up big time, believed in it unerringly and delivered on it in spades! Ali said he was the greatest and then convinced us with his acheivements that he was. He said he'd conquer the world and he did!

By contrast, Mundine has struggled to conquer Australia!

Mundine does some good things for the aboriginal people and that is to be commended. But he has this dillusion that he's a great a role model, and comes across as anything but. Being successful doesn't automatically make you a good role model, it only gives you the opportunity to be one. He could certainly learn a lot from Daniel Geale in this regard.

Judging by the way Mundine spoke on the DSS interview last night he is now struggling to deliver his disproportionate-to-acheivement boasts with the same conviction he once could. It's coming across in his delivery that his self-belief is starting to become influenced by a small dose of reality.

I don't buy all this 'bad guy act puts more bums on seats' bit anyway - he's been an obnoxious turd since he first started mouthing off in the press in his league days.

He has at certain times over the years, wondered why he isn't respected, and earlier in his career, looked close to tears on occasion when he realised the majority of the public didn't like him and wanted to see him fail.

The many people who continually claim the bad guy image is just an act to attract more money and that he's a top bloke away from the sport and does so much for his community fail to see the little boy that is inside Mundine, who wants to be accepted by the mainstream, but is under the influence of a man who was once quoted as saying that he sees every day as another battle in his holy crusade (Nasser).

They fail to remember the times Mundine's father threatened to walk away if he didn't stop clowning around and talking about going back to league and continuing boxing at the same time, or the fact his father has had to develope a politician's answer to anyone asking why his son is so arrogant ("He's a confident boy, my son").

They fail to acknowledge that he is also disliked within the Aboriginal community itself - anyone remember when the story came out about how much he was charging some Aboriginal rights association to advertise in the ring in one of his fights?

They fail to see that he is genuinely a bad loser, and also a bad winner.

The fact is, Australia doesn't need the bad boy image in sport to attract fans - I remember when Mundine first crosed over to boxing, I thought he was just trying to create an almost WWE-like situation, and it fell on flat ground - if it was indeed tongue-in-cheek in order to create a stir, then it backfired on him, because he always wanted recognition and respect in his league days (remember all his whining about not being selected due to racism etc.), and still wants it now, but continues to hide behind claims that its all an act for the money.

Anyone who thinks that he's a happy man because he's made millions out of being hated doesn't understand human frailty, and doesn't realise that Mundine is indeed psychologically frail. Yes, he can focus and get up for his fights, but we've seen him doubting himself and being underconfident in the ring enough times to know that he can't cut it at the top with the big boys and to also know that when he doubts himself, he goes down. If you nuthuggers don't believe that there are times when he finds himself in dark depression, you're not in touch with reality. People who surround themselves with yesmen do it to reduce the amount of time they have to spend on their own, because they know when they are alone, the inevitable self-analysis begins, and they are scared of that.

No amount of money in the world can make someone like that happy.

well he makes brash statements that come back and bite him on the arse. for example melbourne arent the true premiers then his team got spanked 70-10, stating that Sven Ottke hit like a girl and being KTFO for ten minutes. making his fans think that he had improved enough to defeat kessler then running away when given the opportunity,thinkning he is an original thinker and that he has visions of being a political figure and inspiration to his people and he cant string a sentence together.mundine is a funny guy the fact that he is not trying to be makes him funnier. thats what i like about him.
