The first one was more fan-friendly by far.

Well, wiser boxing commentators than you rate it mainly because the best version of both fighters showed up for the first fight.

    Both peak and prime.

Despite PimpC's protestations, Duran was a Lightweight for years and had recently moved up two weight classes to face the best welter since SRR and one of the greatest Welters ever.

Ray might have fought a different fight, but Duran's style and tactics took him out of his game, something great boxers often do.

If Duran had retired after that fight, (as well he could have, given his career till then) Leonard would be much less highly regarded.

In the rematch, which came sooner than the overweight Duran's camp wanted, Duran had to seriously struggle to make weight. He was taking medications (diuretics) the week of the fight. There are many question-marks over the second fight.

It was a big disgrace for Duran to quit the way he did, one of the worst quittages in history by a top boxer, but there were reasons, not the least of which Duran had more need to be parked on a shitter than fighting in a ring.

Simply put, the best version of both were present in 1.

That was not the case in 2.

Montreal was the more telling bout.

That's a comment you might expect from one who gets most of his boxing impressions from Boxrec.

^^^leonard who different styles in two fights...leonard even admit that he wanted to punish duran in the first fight after the heat words from duran during the pre-fight press conference. leonard loss in psychological battle and duran was successful in making it into a brawl.

like i said before, if it was really a great in, why do we have leonard in the top 2-4 h2h while duran struggles to be in the top 15 h2h in the 147 division?

why cant we highly rate rahman's win over lewis in the same manner?

Interesting list there...some very good fighters..I dont agree with all of them but there is no doubt about half of them should be favoured over Duran at welter.

But let me get this straight...you honestly believe that Mayweather would be able to force Duran to quit at welterweight? He couldnt even stop Judah.

sorry, what i mean is that PBF would just "run around" not box duran...maybe 9-3 or 11-4...

what im trying to say...yes, it was a great win that moment but leonard set the record straight in the rematch..much like lewis over rahman...

if people are believe that duran was weight drained, then i assume that they put duran in their top 5 because he beat a legit top 2-4 WW head-to-head...

Are you even reading the responses ?

    He doesn't, dude !

    He's a top six h2h at welter.

And besides, as you've already been told, Welter was Ray's territory that night and Duran had jumped up two divisions to face him.

You're starting to lose your cred here.

Do you really have to ask ?

Rahman's win in the first fight is seen by most as a fluke.

At heavy, one punch can end any fight, especially if you're facing a complacent fighter who didn't take you seriously.

No one calls Duran's win in Montreal a fluke.

So you say that Duran moved up in weight to fight Ray..The fact is Duran hadnt fought as a lightweight for almost three years..Duran Started fighting above Lightweight in 1974 and had his first welterweight fight in 1977 which is the same year that Leonard turned pro..Duran wasnt a lightweight and could only make the weight once in a while so he could defend his title. I love the way that Duran guys say that he moved up in weight but then couldnt make weight for the rematch. Duran lost the rematch because he quit, he quit because he knew that he couldnt beat Ray if he was boxing him. Which is the reason that Duran talked all that **** before the fight the first time...He goated a GREEN Leonard into a brawl, his kind of fight and barely won.

8...8 is the number of welterweight fights that Duran had in a row before his fight with Ray..How the **** is that moving up to fight Ray??? Not only did he fight as a welterweight for those many fights but he was actaully over the welterweight limit in several of those fights.

A pacfan the name of Asero
Found boxing a sport hard to follow
    He looked like an ass
    When he mentioned “No Mas”
His boxing cred dropped to near zero.

He was thinking to boost the great Manny
(Whose skills and speed ARE uncanny!)
    But compared to Duran’s
    Not even Pac’s fans
Would compare. (Not even Pac’s Granny!)

He just needs to spend a few nights
    Watching yesteryear’s great epic fights
    If he’s got decent vision
    He’ll change his decision,
And rethink the things that he writes

That Pac’s still improving’s well known
His skills he continues to hone
    Some day he just might
    Achieve the same height
But for now he’s just not “Hands of stone!”

    You didn't , my man.

But you were headed there before McGrain cut you off !

Then surely you must have some basis for that ranking ?

And most consider that one of Duran's greatest victory.

    Many consider it the greatest.

And I'm a big Pac fan, more so with every fight.

I hope he beats li'l Floyd, in fact I hope JMM does it first.

But I fear neither one will !
