There was a thread here not too long ago about who the most "Over-hyped" fighter was. I posted that it was Hatton. I got Flamed. Does anyone still disagree that Hatton was in deed the most over-hyped fighter? He is very good, but his skills and ability never warranted the amount of hype and being one of the biggest draws in the sport. :deal
Angulo , Kirkland, Gamboa, Taylor, Lacy, Miranda, Khan, Andy Lee, Litzau,.....oh sorry it was only one
I sorta see you point...I dont consider Ricky up there with the best figthers in the world..he is still very good but not in that top tier. Yet he gets T.V spots, money and exposure most fighters will never get close to...so in that respect he is hyped beyond his ability, which really shouldnt be considered a bad thing really..it shows his popularity and appeal. I mean look how beloved Gatti got with the limited ability he had.
Gotta be Jeff Lacy for me, super hyped and achieved absolutely nothing. Ricky Hatton lost to the two best fighters in the world, not event close to me.
Gotta be lacy 4 me 2 or audley i dnt think hatton was 2 bad defo gud 4 boxing due 2 da money and new fans he got into the sport.
Alexander Alekseev. He was hyped as the next undisputed CW champ, next Holyfield, etc and first time adversity came it was no mas.Did't look any good in his comeback against a mediocre opponent either.
its not that hatton was over-hyped by us brits, its because hes just an ordinary guy who hasnt let the fame go to his head, just seems like a decent bloke, not arrogant or a ***** like some champs, i agree that he is good but not the best, but its not that hes overhyped hes just a very popular guy because hes genuine and down to earth :yep
I don't see how, all I saw was Hatton fans "willing" him to win despite KNOWING his limitations, we liked the guy not the skills or at least most of the people I know here in the UK did maybe I am wrong here. People like Lacy were CLAIMED to be the next Tyson (how many ****ing times has that line been used in boxing), and came up WAAAAY short of the mark. Hatton got a big following from being liked, we all knew his limitations and that's why we loved him. He wanted to be the best, we respected his heart not his skills and I still do, you could see how distraught he was to lose to PBF and Pac Man.
audley harrison is a great choice. no offence to him, never knock the hustle. but he did nothing of note to get ranked as high as a top 20 hevay at one point till he lost to williams. he isnt a bad athelete and can beat some guys but he just didnt do anythign to get him the exposure or recognition. similar still is tyson fury. lets not get it twisted, he goes to the body well and mixes up his shots but i less than 10 fights he has been talking about fightign aborad against former champ Ollie McCall. i think some feel that overhyped means the fighter isnt good as seemed. and looking for prospects and th esuch but the real guys who are overhyped could be guys like delahoya, jermain taylor, freitas. why is oscar earning the amount of money that he asks for? his agility and speed seemed to dissappear long ago. yet he is still a draw? why it's not like he is a increidbly exciting fighter. ya semme?
I'd say Zab Judah, every big fight he had he lost. He never beat anyone legitimate, his only significant win was against Spinks.
exactly. compare it to junior witter who is a complete opposite of hatton and he cant even draw flies. hatton goes chin first with the leaping left hook. no one said he was a great fighter he is an exciting fighter and 3 levels above gatti who was receieving good paydays in his time.
I agree that Hatton is down to earth, but does he really need to tell us how down to earth he is in every single interview he has (along with his seemingly mandatory mentions of "pound for pound" and him only referring to himself in the third person)?
Mark Breland. He did have a little success but to say he never lived up to his hype as "the next Ray Robinson" would be something of an understatement. Almost impossible to live up to the hype he received I suppose.
