He was 28 years old when he lost to Grove, and 31 when Phillip Holiday blasted him out in 2. Did the weight loss finally catch up to him? He looked in great shape against Holiday but his punch resistance was absolute ****. Was his will broken and his hunger gone after he was robbed against Nelson?
He should have got the verdict against Azumah, but Nelson was not 100%he had a family bereavement and he was not in top shape ,he put the record straight in the rematch. Fenech was a guy who relied on a frantic workrate ,and 100% fitness , he had brittle hands ,so allthough he threw tons of punches they were seldom devastating, such types of fighters usually have a short shelf life .imo.
Good stuff, thank you McVey. Didn't Azumah have some serious illness when he stepped in against Fenech the first time as well?
I remember reading an interview where he blamed his losses on having sex the night before the fights. :roflatsch
Didn't Ali get a blowjob in the dressing room before Frazier which has been blamed on him losing as well? Supposedly Fenech never had his dick in his pants his entire career so I fail to see what issue it would have made.
You son of a *****, you owe me a new keyboard. I just spit tea all over mine after reading that. :good
Dont forget Fenech was a titlist at 21 and that was at bantamweight..I think like mcvey said he was a fighter with a short shelf life, even still he was at the top for most of his 20's. He most definitely had issues with a party boy lifestyle...Im very good friends with his first wive's neice, who would have been his neice when they were together..the one before Susie. Apparently once he got big he liked to put on parties and go to all the a-list ****, even when in training. She says her mum, Fenech' sister in law, used to consul his wife about all the persistent rumours about him being like a rat up a drain pipe...she doesnt really know about all that 5 woman a day bull**** but he certainly was unfaithful to his first wife.
He claimed he had malaria. I doubt it though, as I've seen what malaria can do to someone. If he had malaria, he'd barely be able to walk, let alone fight.
He didn't blame it on having sex the night before the fight, in his biography DVD he blames it on just having a terrible camp from start to finish which included having sex with anything with a pulse at the time. Jeff was the first fighter became aware of and got me into the sport. In my opinion one of the main reasons he retired was because he had TERRIBLE hands. They were always broken after fights and there is classic footage of him taking the gloves off and showing more pain than at any time in the fight. He was an ATG at cutting the ring off and putting on yet more pressure, his condition was amazing. He won an Aussie title in like his 3rd pro fight and a world title in his 7th from memory.
