So, the latest news: time is not on Vazquez' and Marquez' side. But for now, they remain at the top. It will change in a few months though... Notable results: Chris John D12 Juarez - a clear and impressive win in my book, controversially scored a draw - good victory, just not enough get rid of one of the top guys on the list Darchinyan TKO11 Arce - very impressive unification win, moves up one place Caballero TKO3 Molitor - very impressive unification victory, he's now in the top10 Roman Gonzalez and Juan Manuel Lopez also won one more, but not ready to crack into the top10 The one who falls out of the list, is Daisuke Naito. New rankings, March 2009: 1. = Israel Vazquez (122lbs) 2. = Rafael Marquez (122lbs) 3. ▲ Vic Darchinyan (115lbs) 4. ▼ Ivan Calderon (108lbs) 5. = Chris John (126lbs) 6. = Fernando Montiel (115lbs) 7. = Nonito Donaire (112lbs) 8. ▲ Celestino Caballero (122lbs) 9. = Ulises Solis (108lbs) 10= Hozumi Hasegawa (118lbs)
Israel Vazquez drops out due to inactivity. Although he’ll be back in September, but that’s a year and a half out of the ring, so he’s out for now. He’ll return at FW. Fernando Montiel KO3 Diego Oscar Silva. Montiel picked up a title in his 3rd division, at BW, although an interim version. He’ll face Eric Morel for the full version on June 27, and the winner will hopefully get Darchinyan/Agbeko. Brian Viloria KO11 Ulises Solis. Upset! Solis, rated as the 2nd best LFlyW, got hit by the Hawaiian Punch and was counted out for good. Viloria, not at all impressive in the past, produced his best victory to date, and perhaps just one big win away from this list. Calderon-Viloria anyone? Rafael Marquez KO3 Jose Francisco Mendoza. Although it was a stay busy fight and Marquez looked rusty, he still made it easy vs. Mendoza, stopping the Colombian puncher inside 3 rounds to keep his position, but bigger things now must come, possibly at FW. Pongsaklek Wonjongkam UD12 Julio Cesar Miranda. Wonjongkam dropped out from my list when he lost a very close one then had a draw vs. Daisuke Naito, and did little since then, but now beat The Ring Top10 Julio Cesar Miranda for the interim WBC belt, so he gets back at the last pos. as Izzy is out. Wonjongkam-Naito V anyone? Celestino Caballero MD Jeffrey Mathebula. It was far from impressive, in fact the unified SBW champion barely kept his titles in his 7th defense. Caballero, the Paul Williams of the lower divisions is very impressive in one fight, but looks average in another. Rumors say he’ll fight Yuriorkis Gamboa in August for the Cuban’s interim FW belt. Which Caballero will we see? Toshiaki Nishioka KO3 Jhonny Gonzalez: Upset kid Nishioka produced yet another impressive victory for the belt that was vacated due Vazquez’ inactivity. The fight was in Mexico and Rafa was on the undercard, so who knows, we might get Marquez-Nishioka. Nonito Donaire TKO4 Raul Martinez. Finally Donaire, who did nothing notable since his huge upset victory over Darchinyan years back, fought a legitimate opponent in mandatory challenger Martinez, and looked DAMN good. Seriously: Donaire is clearly P4P material, so cut the bull**** and make him fights Wonjongkam, Montiel or Darchinyan, although promoter Bob Arum ruled out that one stating ‘Darchinyan can’t draw flies to dump’. Stupid old man, Nonito is wasting him best years. Juan Manuel Lopez TKO10 Gerry Penalosa. JuanMa was already the most exciting young gun in the lower divisions, but boy he looked impressive vs. his best opponent to date, extra tough and experienced Gerry Penalosa. Gerry deserves a lot of credit, because he took a hell of a beating, but that’s all he managed to do. JuanMa, welcome to my P4P list! Nobuo Nashiro TKO10 Konosuke Tomiyama. The man who beat Martin Castillo a few years back but lost to Alexander Munoz picked up a title again which he defended vs. countryman Tomiyama. What’s impressive about Nashiro is that he’s already a two-time champion at SFlyW and had 5 world title fights (4-1), and still has only 13 pro fights. He beat division champ Castillo in his 8th. Now he needs to step up to prove he’s special. Hozumi Hasegawa TKO1 Vusi Malinga. Another super impressive win from the true bantamweight champ. Hasegawa is building up and excellent resume and scoring early stoppages - now is the time to travel to the other side of the Pacific Ocean and showcase his talent vs. vs. one of the other top dogs, Agbeko, Montiel, Moreno, Darchinyan or Mijares. Yuriorkis Gamboa TKO10 Jose Rojas. Not exactly your very notable win, but Gamboa picked up an interim version of FW champ Chris John’s WBA belt and did what John failed in two fights (a technical draw and an UD win): score a stoppage over Jose Rojas. Why am I writing about this fight? Because of possible August rivals Caballero and Gamboa, Rojas is the sole common opponent. Jose Rojas knocked out Caballero in 3. Daisuke Naito UD Xiong Zhao Zhong. The lineal flyweight champion of the world, who had 4 fights vs. Thai legend Wonjongkam (1-2-1 record), didn’t look impressive vs. the Chinese contender, was dropped in the fight, and barely retained his title. Time for Wonjongkam-Naito V! Edgar Sosa TKO4 Pornsawan Porpramook. The man who upset Brian Vilora in 2007 is very overlooked, and even more busy. The young Mexican had his 8th defense in April and already lined up no9 for June 20. The problem is with the competition: to make any kind of noise, he’ll either have to face division champion Calderon, or Viloria again now in a unification fight. Raul Garcia TKO6 Ronald Barrera. Not much is happening in the strawweight division, but Garcia finally made some noise. Ranked no2 by The Ring, he dominated and stopped Ronald Barrera (cut) in R6. How about a big one between him and division champion Roman Gonzalez? Updated below 130 P4P list, June 2009: * IN Israel Vazquez (122lbs) 1. ▲ Rafael Marquez (122lbs) 2. ▲ Vic Darchinyan (115lbs) 3. ▲ Ivan Calderon (108lbs) 4. ▲ Chris John (126lbs) 5. ▲ Nonito Donaire (112lbs) 6. ▼ Fernando Montiel (118 lbs) 7. ▲ Hozumi Hasegawa (118 lbs) 8. ▲ Juan Manuel Lopez (122lbs) 9. ▼ Celestino Caballero (122 lbs) 10▲ Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (112 lbs)
Look at the date people. That was his first post in this thread in april 08.He has changed it since then.
U a noob or somethin'? You only had to do to scroll down to the newest post. Anyways, I see it's causing confusion, so I updated the opening post. :thumbsup
Very quickly through the most significant Summer results, see the updated rankings below: - Roman Gonzalez beat Takayama, but he still needs a step-up or unification to make it to the top10 - Edgar Sosa produced 2 dominating performances this Summer over okay opposition, he’s definitely the one to watch out for at LFW, how about the Vilora rematch for a guaranteed top10 spot? - Ivan Calderon beat Mayol again by TD, and didn’t impress. The 34 year-old might be fading a bit - Joseph Agbeko beat Vic Darchinyan, close but very impressive victory over Vic who was moving up in weight, Agbeko is one legit BW opponent away (Yonnhy Perez, Oct. 15) from a top10 spot, Vic drops down a few places, returns vs. interim SFW champ Tomas Rojas in December - Chris John, dominating Rocky Juarez for 11 rounds tried to brawl out the last round in a fight dedicated to Arturo Gatti, but almost got knocked out. Impressive stuff for 11 rounds, courageous finish, but don't expect the classy John brawling with a puncher any time soon - Nonito Donaire didn’t really impress in his SFW debut vs. Rafael Concepcion. A few weeks later he had a very high fever, wish him well - Nehomar Cermeno beat Mijares in Mexico for the 2nd time and Anselmo Moreno beat Monshipour in France, impressive victories by the BW champs - Hozumi Hasegawa completely stole the Summer producing yet again a stunning 1-round annihilation vs. OK Nestor Rocha, Hozumi is for real - Celestino Caballero beat Leal in 8, JuanMa beat Lontchi in 9, after Lopez is done with Mtagwa, we might get JuanMa-Caballero (and Gamboa-Luevano) early next year! Updated below 130 P4P list, September 2009: * IN Israel Vazquez (122lbs) 1. = Rafael Marquez (122lbs) 2. ▲ Chris John (126lbs) 3. ▲ Hozumi Hasegawa (118 lbs) 4. ▼ Ivan Calderon (108lbs) 5. = Nonito Donaire (112lbs) 6. ▼ Vic Darchinyan (115lbs) 7. ▲ Juan Manuel Lopez (122lbs) 8. ▼ Fernando Montiel (118 lbs) 9. = Celestino Caballero (122 lbs) 10.= Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (112 lbs)
Final notes and results of 2009 below 130 lbs: - FW Israel Vazquez returned from long lay-off with less than stellar performance, Rafael Marquez did not fight since the tune-up, they are dropping positions. Unfortunately for their health and due to our selfish demands, looks like they’ll fight for the 4th time next year. But what good is a fat pay check if you’re risking brain damage? Sorry, but these guys hit each other too much, I’m going to ignore the fight totally. I have the trilogy in superb quality and rewatching their brawls won’t cause them further harm. The 4th fight most likely will. This is a cruel sport - SBW Juan Manuel Lopez came very close to get knocked out by the heavy underdog but extremely tough Rogers Mtagwa, who made their fight a top FOTY candidate. Lopez got genuinely hurt in the 11th and barely, I mean BARELY survived the scare to win a close decision. He’s not gonna overtake others but will have his chance in January when he’ll take on FW champ Luevano - SBW Nishioka Toshiaki beat Hernandez and SBW Poonsawat stopped Bernard Dunne, both wins noted. - BW world champion Hozumi Hasegawa once again impressed with a YouTube-ready 4th round KO of Eric Morel substitute Alvaro Perez to retain his title for the 10th time. He’s so damn impressive even if the Malinga was the only big test (won by KO1) this year. Should he overtake John and with the downfall of Marquez and Vazquez, be #1? Tough call... but for the moment and with the year ending, I felt he did better than John overall, so he’s getting ahead of him. Moving up is on Hozumi’s mind too, he’ll most likely drop his BW belt to join the SBW OR the FW division, damn can’t wait - Yonnhy Perez beat the highly skilled Joseph Agbeko in a great fight, and a great performance. Perez, a late starter, is a very solid fighter him vs. Moreno could decide BW’s faith when Hesegawa moves up - speaking of Moreno, he scored two very solid wins vs. mediocre opposition in the last 3 months. However, since he also beat Sidorenko (again) and Monshipour this year, he’s closing on the top guys. Very underrated fighter - undisputed SFW champ Vic Darchinyan came back with a bang, knocking out interim WBC champ Tomas Rojas in 2. Having fought the 5th champ in a row and only lost outside of his division vs. Agbeko, Darchinyan moves back up a bit - FW Nobuo Nashiro had a draw with Hugo Cazares, rematch might come next. Fellow countryman and East Side Boxing favorite Koki Kameda however upset division lineal champion Daisuke Naito, becoming a two-division champion at 23. Solid victory, and he could face Thai legend Pongsaklek Wonjongkam next. Speaking of Thai vs. Japanese rivalry: Denkaosan Kaovichit beat Daiki Kameda and will give him a rematch - LFW champ Edgar Sosa very controversially lost to headbutter specialist Rodel Mayol in a fight which should be changed to NC. Sosa will either have a rematch or move up and fight someone else, don’t rule out Koki. Giovanni Segura continued to impress as he knocked out Sonny Boy Jaro in 1 Updated below 130 P4P list, final rankings of 2009: 1. ▲ Hozumi Hasegawa (118 lbs) 2. = Chris John (126lbs) 3. ▲ Vic Darchinyan (115lbs) 4. = Ivan Calderon (108lbs) 5. = Nonito Donaire (115lbs) 6. ▲ Juan Manuel Lopez (122lbs) 7. ▲ Fernando Montiel (118 lbs) 8. ▲ Celestino Caballero (122 lbs) 9. ▲ Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (112 lbs) 10▲ Koki Kameda (112lbs) * IN Israel Vazquez (126lbs) * IN Rafael Marquez (126lbs)
