Suprisingly, it took about 10 replies before I agreed with somebody here. I'm suprised to see all the votes for Gatti. At an even weight, I don't see ANY way that Gatti could have beaten Forrest (twice). This coming from someone who never liked Mayorga. Gatti's skill level was abhorrent. Great for the sport he truly lived up to the moniker "ultimate blood & guts warrior" but I don't think his overall skillset was on the same level as Mayorga's-and that's not saying much.

Let's clear this up. Asero didn't ask for who had the more well rounded skill-set, or who was the more technically sound fighter. He asked who had the better overall ability, as in who was the most effective inside the ring. Gatti was never going to beat a fighter of Forrest's caliber, nor fight on the highest level the way Mayorga was doing in his prime, so it's a moot point that he was a more technically skilled boxer. Mayorga was the more effective, and thus the better of the two.

the press row scores 7-4 for mosley going into the final round...2 judges had it for mosley but there is one judge that had mayo winning by a point...

:goodskill is just a subset of ability

ability is your overall talent and who can you beat
you may also add chin and heart into determining the overall ability of a fighter. He maybe one dimensional ala trinidad but great h2h match-up for any fighter

I had Mayorga ahead by one point and I'm a Mosley fan. Mayorga showed determination there, I honestly expected Mosley to blow him out within 5 rounds at most that day and was shocked from the opening bell.

Mayorga seems to be too underrated, maybe because he fought far too many good fighters and ended up losing more or maybe because Gatti is advertised more.

To me it's not even close that Mayorga is the better man. Put Gatti in there against Forrest or Mosley and see what happens to him.

I'm not that surprised many are counting Mayorga out like he's no good, fans here think this is a popularity contest.

Mayorga was looked at as a very good test when guys like Mosley/DLH/Forrest/Spinks/Lewis. Who was Gatti taken as a good test going in against?, even the Mayweather fight he tried to avoid and was cornered by having to fight him as a mandatory.

Just because Mayorga relied on natural attributes doesn't mean he is less able.

What about the way Gatti lost to Oscar?, I know Gatti was smaller in comparison to Mayorga but still he took that fight anyway.

One could argue that Gatti's 2 wins over Tracy Harris Patterson are Arturos career best wins. While Mayorgas wins over Forrest and his effectiveness against Mosely are all around more impressive, the ability displayed by Gatti against Patterson is superior to any skills that Mayorga has ever shown.

Mayorga, clearly was the better fighter imo.

Forrest is head and shoulders above anybody on Gatti's record

Gatti he could box with people at the lower end of the top tier and tried to reinvent himself a little towards the end of his career
Mayorga was always a slugger, with a god awful stance and technique tuff as nails and fun to watch but never very skilled
