It only takes an additional 21 days to rehab. Im no back expert, but I do know that back injuries are very different in type. If this is a lumbar strain then the time leading up to the fight should be fine for him.

My point is if you can fight in 21 more days you can fight the scheduled date. This cannot be a serious injury because there is NO WAY IN HELL he could be ready to fight again in 21 more days from the scheduled date if it were a serious injury. This is not a serious spinal injury.

So folks this has to be a strain. Here are the symptoms. Haye should be a man and fight through this.

      • Pain around the low back and upper buttocks
      • Low back muscle spasm
      • Pain associated with activities, and generally relieved with rest

I dont buy into the "conspiracy theory" but i must admit that its slightly odd that Booth can give a date for complete recovery ? Untill his camp give more details of the injury,we can only speculate as to what sort of back injury it is.

I see the OP's point. For something like this, it is either the scheduled date or 3+ months from then with nothing in between.

I dont have a theory about it. I am just pointing out that a major back injury cannot possibly be ready to go with an additional 21 days. These things just dont heal right now without stem cells being used, which is still not a common practice.

So Haye will get some drug rehab and some basic exercises to do. This is the kind of injury professional athletes have to play through. Look at USA professional football players. This is a common injury and players always deal with it.

This cannot possibly be a "spinal" or disc injury. If this was a spinal injury haye wouldnt be ready to box again, possibly ever. This is a strain!

I agree completely with your points rightcross, having been unfortunate enough to suffer with back problems i can speak at first hand on how debillitating and painful these kind of injuries can be.I'm guessing Hayes problem is muscular, and that his medical team believe drugs/massage/physio will sort the problem. If the injury were spinal he would be out for months, and may even finish his career.:good

There's a little (very little) info from his trainer here:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ot...ance-may-have-come-and-gone-says-trainer.html

Vagueness such as "a condition that requires aggressive physiotherapy".

It's Haye's call whether to fight at less than 100%. He just has to weigh increasing the chance of losing vs. the chance Wlad books a replacement and has to wait/earn a return shot.

I think "playing through it" is more of a business decision in boxing than in other sports. As well, in other sports, someone else has you under contract and is paying you; in boxing, if you don't fight, you don't get paid. The decision is more yours. I respect Haye's right to fight at his best, but he just has to accept it if a replacement is booked.

I thought the same as well. If it's a serious back injury, there's no way he could be fine in 21 days. Then again it might not even be a major back injury. It might just be something bothering him and since it's the biggest fight of his career, he's decided to play it safe than sorry.

I think it's a legit back problem combined with some showmanship. He mentioned before this whole injury business that he had one more tactic left for Wlad and that after he put it in play he'd relax and prepare for the fight. Maybe he had something else planned and the back issue just happened to fall into his lap.

Im in the same boat as you two shakes. I hurt my back on a motorcycle years ago and when I get back pain now, I have to work through it. After a couple days of ligth work i am good to go. If I take drugs Im fine.

haye can battle through this easily within 2 weeks. If he only needs 21 more days to be ready then its not a serious injury, its a muscle or lumbar strain.

I agree with you but you cant have it both ways. If you have a minor injury and you want to be 100% then you cant expect a major title fight to wait for you. If you are majorally hurt, the fight cant come off in 21 days of rehab.

This type of injury likely wouldnt even affect his performance much with some mild medication and rest he would be fine in just a number of days, not weeks.

If the injury isn't that bad Haye could tough it out and go on, this is a big payday and the biggest fight of his career.

I find it interesting that Haye recently said he must fight like Tyson.
To fight like Tyson requires a lot of bobbing and bending at the waist. I wonder if he hurt himself trying to implement a completely new style?

Its possible, if the injury happened at camp it was likely due to unsafe training methods as there must have been a minor trauma.

Again though this is a simple muscle strain, most of us who have been involved in sports have had these. Any Dr. can write a mild script and Haye lays down for 2 days and then some light stretching and he would be fine to fight.

To be fair we really don't necessarily know what type of injury it is. It's hard to make a solid statement on it yet.

Sides Haye vs Wlad was THE marquee event. Haye could easily say that Wlad wouldn't find anybody close to him in terms of a big fight (and Wlad could easily say the same).

If Haye thinks 21 days is enough time to recover and the event CAN be pushed back a bit to July 11th or so, I'd give it a shot. If I was HBO and Wlad, I'd have a fighter on stand by just in case something goes wrong...and if Haye backs out again, banish him back to the CW division.

Well, i refer to my initial argument then. There is no way this is a disc injury and this fight can take place in another 21 days. A disc injury cannot heal in that time span..back injuries dont heal they are just treated for symptoms.

Since this cannot be a disc injury. Then the other option is a strain. A muscle strain. This is not the type of injury I would see stopping a major title fight with still 2 weeks to go. these are common injuries that dont require any real medical work.

Very easy to play, fight through with very basic treatment, drugs, stretching and a couple days rest.

Or maybe a couple of weeks could make a big differnce. Strains can heal quickly but they can cause problems if they don't heal.

I'm no doc. maybe he could maybe he couldn't but I'm not going to second guess it.
