What do I do about a very sore left shoulder muscle injury that is on and off again? I've been doing my boxing training with a hurt left shoulder muscle to varying degrees this week. I think a combination of overuse and weightlifting caused it, it affects the circular motion of my shoulder when I rotate it, so jabbing or hooking causes damage, but the thing is it'll nearly heal up after a couple days, so what should I do about this injury, it's probably a strain or sprained muscle and at the very worst a small tear, but I can still throw my left hooks and left jabs fine. I've been using Icy Hot cream to get me through my training though so I may need to rest my left arm.

i had somewhat the same thing but mine grinds and pops, i went to the dr and they did an mri and i had a partially torn rotator cuff so they gave me a cortosone shot and but me on a therapy program. they said that those injuries start out as tendonitis and gradually tear over time and punishment. so that could be it. you should check with your dr, cuz if thats what it is and then u end up tearing it, mann it puts a damper on things.

Yes, I'm just getting started out training a month or so ago so I'm trying to learn and work a lot, doing 6X3 Shadowboxing and 4X3 Heavybag 5 times a week. What is tendonitis and what does it do? It wasn't as bad today, I tried to minimize my left hand but I used it some, it's not bothering me now. I really need to continue working on my jab and left hooks so I may need to rest some to get back to 100 percent.

it is inflammation of the tendons (rotator cuff) i tore mine throwing a hook but it had been sore for about a year before and i never let up. they said it started out as tendonitis. no there are 4 muscles of the rotator cuff and USUALLY but not always it generally only affects one or two of them at a time. for tendonitis ib profen, ice and heat. also lighten up on hooks especially. if you end up getting a partial tear they'll make you do therapy, and if it's a full tear they'll push you for surgery although they can force you because you can live with it. However from personal experience, if you want to continue to box with minimal interruptions and remain in the least amount of pain i suggest you take the propper care for it now, cuz if you work through it, it'll screw you over in the long run.

At my gym we started out with a jab and right hand. we weren't allowed to learn the hook or use it until we had the jab and right down sound everytime. so just focus on those two and throw out the hook for now. It won't hurt you to do that and it doesnt mean you cant fight. 95 percent of fighters dont know how to hook by their first fight anyway. I know i didnt and i won my first fight in 45 seconds. So just focus on mastering those, dont hurt your shoulder, and lay off the hook till your ready

i guess i cant tell how its going cuz the cortersone. its grinding and popping still but a bit less and doesnt hurt at all. But i cant lighten up either cuz i have ringside in august. the therapy i'm doing is 5 exercises
consisting of no weight. lateral arm raise 1 set of 10. laying on my stomach lifting my arm so its perpendicular to my body, another of the same but instead of 90 degrees your armpit creates a 45 degree angle. and one where u lay on your back and hold your arm toward the ceiling, then lift the shoulder blade off the surface. All exercises for the first week are done with 10 reps and 1 set with zero weight and a two second hold. the second week was the same with one pound and the third with 2 and 4th with 3, now i am just waiting for my follow up next wednesday.

oh yeah p.s. for all the workouts they stress that you make sure ur thumbs are pointing upward

Sounds like a rotator cuff injury. It's happened to me once. You're going to have to take a few weeks off from using it too much. Do light exercises (nothing that strains it) with light weights just so you can get blood flow through it. Other than that, it'll just heal with time - for some, it can take a month or two.

cuz they said something about if you cant see your thumbs chances are your stressing it, and thumbs up has something to do with a better position for less stress on the cuff while still exercising it. they told me don't rotate it, thats one of the worst stressers you can do, but again maybe that's because mine is partial torn. they said if i tear it completely and have to have surgery, your not back up to 100 percent for up to 8 months. and 6 weeks in a brace and another six in a sling. they also said to sleep with a pillow under my arm
