I have recently started (trying) to get back into shape and therefore I want to drop a couple of pounds. On advice from some of my friends I have begun to run before having breakfast because running on an empty stomach supposedly helps burning more calories. Is this a fact or a myth?

    Thanks in advance

I would think that is a myth, but idk. I don't see how you could run on an empty stomach, since you won't have any fuel for that run. Plus, not eating will slow down your metabolism

Some say it will burn more fat as your glycogen stores will be somewhat depleted after a long nights sleep. Though it will not burn any more calories and may lead to more muscle wasting, due to the body using fat and protein stores as energy.

In short, no it will not burn more calories, but most likely more fat will be burned due to low blood sugar/glycogen levels.

Im no expert but i would have thought as with alot of these myths i would have thought if it is true the effect would be very small or negligable. More important to makesure you do the run and feel good doing it and personally a completely empty stomach makes me feel drained and tired and i know my run wouldnt be as intense

I just have a glass of water and a banana before I go out in the morning. Also take a bottle of water with me.

Wow, your friend obviously doesn't like you very much. Have something light before you run. Maybe a fruit or some other light carbohydrate source. Running on empty hurts you more than it helps- your muscle gets broken down before fat.

Exactly, you're sacrificing performance for something that may or may not be true. At least have a banana or a granola bar, some sort of snack before heading out.

No. Always eat something, don't run on a full stomach , but as Amy says at least have a piece of fruit or something.

it depends at what time you run. Usualy when I run I get up early in the morning, before eating breakfest on a normal day (heck, before waking up on an average day  ) but I always eat a fruit or at least a piece of fruit before going running and I always bring water with me.

I'm sure it won't do u any harm because Fighters have been doing it for generations. It also saves time as u don't need to wait an hour or two for your food to digest.

it is harmful, and what fighters have been doing it for generation? the same ones who used to believe in running 10 miles a day and only eating steak and eggs?

you dont need to digest your food.
