First of all the great Azumah Nelson is not my boy and this all time great fighter and man is exactly that a man not a boy. You make it sound as if Arguello a man who was stopped several times was unbeatable. Perhaps the reason he did not lose at 130 pounds was because though he fought some really good guys he never faced an Azumah Nelson, PBF, Chavez or quite that level of fighter. Yes he beat the likes of Chacon and Escalera and later Macini and Jim Watt at 135 pounds but that is not exactly the same is it.
Thanks. I know Tommy got the dimensions that impress people. he is sharp and impressive. he starts fast in most of his fights. But Cuevas broke bones, broke faces, broke ribs. He was like the Bob Fitzsimmons of his day causing damage to the internal organs of his opponents. That's why him and Julian Jackson are two of my favorite fighters. No matter the skill of the opponent, they just took them out when they wanted! I cant believe Palomino would have survived his attack for 15 rounds. Cuevas was too relentless a foe. You think Pipino just going to let Carlos box him at a leisurely pace? Never has he faced anyone so incredibly powerful, so thoroughly ruthless. Frankly, I dont think he could take his bludgeoning attack for too long I had to put in Cuevas over Hearns even tho Tommy did him in. It was one of Tommy's best performances but his resume is a little thin. THose defenses were against weak challengers. I dont know if you ever read the story on his last defense vs Pablo Baez, this fight could not get sanctioned becuz Pablo was not in the top ten and if I remember correctly may have been ranked as low as 19. At the last minute Baez was given a number 10 ranking from the WBA so it could go on as a title fight. That's like cheating. I'm just filling you in becuz a lot of people dont know this. The people he stepped over on the way up were no different-total has beens. No offense but who had he really fought? Curry was a capable fighter but the others? Those were chosen as carefully as everyone else he faced after Leonard; Singletary, Sutherland, Geraldo, McKraken. You get the point. These are all sub par lower portion of the top ten either. And did you notice that none of them are what you call dangerous risks?
Fenech did not flog his arse at all and he proved it decisively in the rematch kicking the living **** out of the unbeaten Fenech.
One of the judges gave the 1st fight to Nelson 116-112 like I did. I think it was Miguel Donate. In any event Azumah murdered him in the rematch did he not or are you going to make excuses. Arguello was stopped many times and knocked out cold which Nelson never once only stopped by TKO in the 1st Sanchez fight when he ran out of gas in a15 round as a novice pro and last minute substitute. Even when way past his bestb and an old man stopped the likes of world champions Gabe Ruelas and Jesse James Leija.
I gaurantee you will not find 5 other people in this whole Eastside forum who will agree with your opinion that trinidad beat oscar. Almost everyone in this forum will have oscar winning. Please tell me how exactley tito beat oscar? which rounds did you have him winning?
Unfortunately a lot of people wrongly view the great Cuevas based on TV clips of his fight against Hearns. Cuevas was another real great fighter that has graced this division. In fact such is the depth in this division that we should probabaly be talking about the greatest 25. If you think about we have not considered the likes of Marlon Starling, Simon Brown, Honeyghan, Ike Quartey and others all very good fighters.
I really don't care whether 5 or more or in fact no one agrees or disagrees with me on this. I can only call fights like I see them. For me Tito won the fight clearly from the 1st round. He put a lot of physical and psychological pressure on Golden Girl who absolutely refused to engage and trade running all night. People try and make it out as if Golden Girl was robbed. Emphatically he was not. That night only 1 champion came to fight which made it not a great spectacle to watch. Being kind to Golden Girl I scored it 116-113.
What happened in the rematch has NOTHING to do with what actually happened in the original encounter sorry. Fenech did indeed flog your bf's arse.
it's different as you are seing it happen as compared to reading about him. Youre right, most people just llok at Pipino from the Hearns fight so it sounds funny when you bring up Cuevas as a top welter. But Cuevas was like no other. I've seen Quartey, Curry, Starling, and the most notable, Brown (vs. Jorge Maysonet, Trice, Norris) so I get to compare them. The images of the last fight with Espada and that horrible beating with him slumped on the canvas holding his ribs and likewise Harold Weston, are things most here arent even aware of. Cuevas broke men like Clyde Gray and Ranzany with ease. Broke them open like eggshells. There's nothing like seeing someone in action for yourself which is why I never bring up these people like Walcott out of respect for them I might be selling them short
Well your glowing and loving description shows that he is, indeed ya boy. Arguello was stopped 3 times in a career of 90 fights. One was as an absolute juvenile and two vs a great fighter while Alexis was well past his best weight and time. Nelson lost 6 of 47, Arguello 8 of 90. Nelson should have lost to Fenech. Nobody is saying Alexis is unbeatable, but he'd sure beat on your precious Azumah at 130. Well the thing is Azumah DID lose at 130, and Arguello didn't. So get over it. Not like Azumah fought anyone special there either beside a Fenech who near killed him first fight. Um, who did Azumah beat at 130 and 135 again? Can you really see Azumah beating both Mancini and Watt? You are an embarrassment to the forum, and indeed Nelson.
I am happy to debate provided you are not rude and we debate with courtesy and decorum. Fenech did not flog Azumah's arse and the verdict proved it. I know Azumah was not himself but his accurate counter punching won the fight over Fenech crude pressure volume a lot of which was inaccurrate. Perhaps we should agree to disagree on this.
And yet tho Hearns completely utterly, totally decimated and embarrassed your #3 at his best and has such a paper thin resume you STILL rank Cuevas 3? :rofl
Azumah fought and lost to fellow all time great Pernell Whittaker at 135 pounds. To quote Pernell Whittaker after the fight "Azumah is a great great fighter and I dared not go toe to toe with him. I had to be on my toes all night". This is how complimentary Whittaker was of Nelson. Jim Watt and Mancini would have been crucified by Nelson since you ask. You are the embarassment to the forum by asking whether Nelson would have beaten Watt and Macini. Getting lucky against Sean O' Grady is not the same as facing Azumah Nelson believe me.
