Aaron Pryor vs the current 135-140 pounders

Why the hell are you asking lightweight/junior welterweight? Pryor never fought at lightweight. You should be asking 140/147, and at 147, he gets beaten by most of the top dogs, IMO. Floyd frustrates him and picks him apart. Williams outworks him. Mosley knocks him out late. Cotto is a 50/50 fight. Pryor gets way too much love for a guy whose only truly significant wins were against a guy whose best was at 130 and who was past prime when Pryor fought him.

 

He sort of fought at lightweight, but he never actually made a weight below 135, so what's the point? Manny Pacquiao fought at 105, but you never see anyone talk about what he'd do against minimumweights because it's irrelevant.

Yes, Pryor would wreck Berto, and I do think Cotto would have problems with him, though I think Pryor would have problems with Cotto as well. Pryor didn't deal with slick that well though, best I can tell. I could be wrong there though - I can't claim to have seen his full library of fights.

 

The Alexis Argeullo was past his best are just excuses to make up for his brutal kos from Pryor. He was coming off brutal ko wins over Rooney, Ganigan and Mancini, he loses to Pryor and an excuse is made. Alexis always fought guys he was significantly taller than and had an enormous reach advantage over, he fights Pryor and gets beat up, no other excuse. If Cervantes was so washed up, why was he the champ and winning all of his fight?

 

Yeah, it's called COCAINE, and Pryor coming out of the corner like a man on fire after being nearly out on his feet at the end of the previous round, round after round. Also, given what we know about what Lewis did with Luis Resto I wouldn't be surprised if his gloves were short a little padding.

JMM, in a fair fight, would make Pryor look like the amateurish windmiller he was. Pryor was 'special' all right, the biggest fake and cheater in the history of boxing never publically outed and shamed. Oh wait, he WAS publically outed with the little black bottle. It just doesn't matter to you.

Panama Lewis and YOU are the tools. Pryor was just a crackhead with zero honor who allowed himself to be used.

 

Cervantes was old and on the verge of done. AA was past his best days and his best weight and Pryor still needed cocaine to keep standing against him. Most of his other fights were against guys with .500 records. The fact that ANYONE thinks he's a HOF level fighter is a joke. Just goes to show you what a mean face and prefight histrionics can do for you, Mayorga really mismanaged his career by actually fighting tough guys, because he could have had you guys slobbing his knob just like Pryor if he had played it right.

 

No, they do something called "drug test" fighters.

Not every commission can be trusted to mysteriously "lose" the results of the drug test like Miami's did.

It's weird, Pryor was the #1 ranked lightweight contender (per Ring rankings) while he was the jr. welterweight champion, yet he hadn't fought at 135 in quite some time.

Pryor would have an extra 20-24 hours nowadays to go down to 135 so I don't picture that being a serious problem. As overrated as I think Pryor often is historically (like The Ring), or by people who watch too much Legendary Nights, I think he'd clean up around 135 and 140, except for maybe Pacquiao.

 

I'm pretty sure Pryor would crush everyone from today's 135-140. Pryor was like Pacquiao but better.

 

i can see pac dropping pryor, but pryor wins this one for sure. to begin with, pryor is not to be confused with hatton. he much stronger, he was fast, not as fast as manny, but he could also box as well. i think if jmm was able to get to manny in the middle rounds and hurt him many times, pryor, like manny, loved to fight more than anything and had an unstoppable will to win. he also grew stronger as the fight went on, he took powerful shots from arguello that easily matched mannys shots in terms of power that should of ko'd pryor, but pryor was still standing. this is the same man that would spar with ray leonard and according to him won half the time. it would be a close fight, but many thought what hatton might of done to manny by attacking the body, pryor would of done. i think either way manny fights, pryor will lure him into a slugfest like duran to leonard and pryor wins by decision.

Pryor didn't fight anyone. It just amazes me how he's so overrated. He fought and OLD Cervantes and then went life and death with Arguello past his prime with like 90 fights already, and not at his best weight. Ridiculous. If he wasn't American he wouldn't be so overrated. He then got KO'd by some bum but he was "past" it. Gotta love it.

 

I agree, he'd beat pretty much everyone at 135-140, other than maybe Pacquiao, but I think that speaks more to the lack of top fighters in those weights than it does to the greatness of Pryor. I do think he has serious problems with the guys at 147 though. 135 is overrated as a division anyway right now. It's like 168, a lot of depth, but not a lot of top level fighters. 147 has the opposite problem, a few great guys at the top, then Berto and Collazo (and maybe Cintron), then a huge drop off.
