how will acelino frietas be remembered for his boxing career?

i never paid attention to freitas but the more fights i watch of him, the more i think i should have. frietas may not be great but i think his career was a remarkable one and certainly considerable to the hof.

-frietas bagan his career with 29-0(29) which included 1st round stoppages of future champ javier jarugui and wbo champ anatoly alexandrov.
-he moved up in weight and beat artur grigorian in his 18th title defense.
-controversial but good win over casamayor as well as barrios and raheem.

frietas had hand speed, foot speed, ring generalship and a huge right hand. the only thing that frietas may not have had was endurance.

how will he be remembered?

i think it would have been a heck of fight if the best frietas fought edwin valero.

 

I don't think he'll be remembered all too fondly. Probably a sense that he should've done more than he did, a mix between styles, and surrendering against Corrales (and later Diaz).

I thought the Casamayor win was pretty good though. I felt the decision was fair (I had it 114-112 Popo). Casa's been a very good fighter throughout the years.

 

A gooid puncher that cried after all his fights.

 

A dangerous puncher who lacked the mental toughness to pull through adversity.

 

I wouldn't say that, Barrios had him down and in trouble in the 11th round and then Freitas stopped him in the 12th. Don't think anybody can disagree with the notion that Chico took his heart though.

 

Unfortunately he will be remembered for the quitting.

But the dude did just enough to get past a prime Casa, which I did not expect him to even get close to doing...and had some wicked KO's to his name.

A very impressive athletic talent....lacked a bit of ticker and chin though.

Actually technically he was sloppy. He pulled away from punches with his chin in the air, and he often threw wild shots, and alot of times he slapped with his left hook.

He was very athletically gifted though. Fast hands, good reflexes, good feet. At 130 his power was very dangerous, but diminished at 135. I think he messed up his career by getting with the late Oscar Suarez. Suarez turned him from an agressive killer in the ring, to a boring counterpuncher.

Chico exposed his lack of heart, as well as his lack of stamina. Then Juan Diaz once again exposed his lack of heart, but by that time Frietas was washed up.

He was a good fighter, but his lack of heart and true skill cost him at the top. Still... at his best I think he woulda KO'd Diaz instead of losing to him.

 

if anything technically he was good on his feet. he was boxing circles around corrales in the first few rounds.

 

Agree with above poster about Barrios fight. The punch right on the bell at the end of the eleventh was a peach!

 

yeah but barrios looked like he was finished. the cut was worsening and the punch that dropped popo was the finest punch the guy had thrown his whole career.

you could say the same about barry jones knocking him down, that is adversity.
