YOUNG GRIFFO - If these fights (as you say) are easy wins, why would you class them as good matchups ? Just Curious. I would have like to have seen Chavez rematch Whitaker

 

Jerry Quarry-George Foreman is a match that absolutely should have taken place, either before or after George won the title. In interviews at the time, Foreman did not sound at all enthusiastic when asked repeatedly about facing Jerry in a sanctioned bout. Today, George states that he purposely avoided Quarry. While he's known for his charitable remarks with regards to former rivals today, his reserved demeanor back when queried on facing Quarry during the early 1970s convinces me that he's not simply honoring the memory of a fallen competitor here.

Foreman was obsessed with making money during his title reign. Jerry would have been a huge draw for him, even outside the United States, when factoring in closed circuit proceeds. Don Dunphy projected Quarry as George's next opponent during and after Jerry's win over previously undefeated Ron Lyle. So, why did it never happen, unless Foreman's telling the truth?

 

Yep, I remember that, and Chavez and Norris certainly hated each other plenty. The reason I asked is because someone asked me awhile ago about why Chavez Nelson was never made. I replied by talking about timing and weight classes, that Chavez was leaving 135 a couple of years or so before Nelson went there to try to take on Pea. Still, it got me thinking about what an entertaining fight it would have been, even if Nelson probably wouldn't have been effective against Chavez.

So, I just thought I'd ask.

 

Yes, Nelson was pursuing that fight for some time.

 

And do you think Saad would've been Eddie Mustafa with the more 'gung-ho' approached he showed after their first fight?

 

I don't know, Saad looked like he was bothered by Mustafa's strength and power from what I saw in their first fight.

I always thought Mustafa had the potential to be the better fighter anyway, if he simply dedicated himself to making full use of his talents.

 

Chavez was on the downward slope & Whitaker had fitted perfectly into the 147 division, Whitaker would have won clearly IMO.

 

Tyson-Bowe! It could have happened in 1996. While most people would have picked Bowe to win, I'm not so sure!

Tuson was still ferocious & I for one would liked to have seen how Bowe would have dealt with such aggressiveness!

 

They're still good match ups that had the potential to happen but didn't. I just think that's how the results would've played out.

I don't have a crystal ball though so there's a big,big chance that I could've been wrong on both accounts.:good
