With fighters like Marquez, Barrera, Morales slowly if not already moving out of the picture who is going to try and fill their shoes?
Abner Mares barring some sort of unforeseen incident will be a very good fighter in the future. I know he recently signed up with Espinoza boxing and they usually do a good job with prospects. My only worry is that Nacho Beristain dropped Abner and now we'll get to see how much of it is Abner Mares and how much of it was Nacho. Victor Ortiz is a strange case. I'm 99.999% sure he's American but I can see some people trying to claim him. Some already do. Urbano Antillon is a nice LW from Top Rank who will be given every opportunity to fill the mantle as one would say.
They have high hopes for that Opie-looking guy who fought over the weekend. He's impressed me so much that I haven't even bothered to remember his name.
Abner mares urbano antillo canelo alvarez antonio demarco marvin quintero tyson marquez (for those of you who like southpaw's, check this kid out) vicious vic el perro angulo robert guerrero plus, we still got guys like baby bull, juarez, ponce de leon, rafa marquez, izzy vasquez, soto, cazares, arce, montiel, mijares, solis, and a whole bunch of other guys that will still make for some great fights and might even pick up some titles again....
I would say these 3: Abner Mares, Saul Canelo Alvarez, Antillon, i see more future in the first 2 and in about 3 years you will start to hear from a guy called Miguel Beltran Jr, his level of opposition is poor right now but the guy is really good i just want to see how good is his chin, i havent seen him getting hit so i dont know yet, thats what i got...
Umm...not to be rude or anything, but where have you been? Barrera and Morales have pretty much been "out" as far as being competitive against world-class opposition for the last couple of years. Unfortunately for Marquez, he got the exposure a little too late. He is 35(?) and even though he is pretty preserved, his reflexes and ring wear will surely catch up to him pretty soon. Keep in mind, he did beat PacMan twice, IMO. There are a couple of Mexican fighters who are prospects, but it remains to be seen if they are the real deal or not. They are as follows: Antonio DeMarco, Abner Mares, and Marvin Quintero. These are only three that I have personally seen, but I am sure there are more out there who haven't gotten the HBO or Showtime exposure yet.
canelo alvarez...Omar nino also fought this weekend and won a tittle eliminator, hes about to face Sosa for the tittle. Sosa is also a great champ and hopefully who ever wins from these two faces the winner of Calderon Vs Mayol.
I like Sosa, and it seems like he's becoming a star in Mexico itself, but he fights in too low of a weight class to become a big thing in the US. I'm not big on Alvarez, Quintero or DeMarco. Alvarez just seems very average to me in terms of all his tools - no real handspeed, no great power, etc. He's technically sound, and I guess he could go places because he's really young, but I get the same feeling with him as I do with Andre Ward - low ceiling, but a high chance of reaching it. Fortunately for him, the current welterweight elite are all getting up there in age, and he can be as good as anyone in the second tier, but he'll never be as good as Cotto / Mosley / Mayweather / Williams simply because of his lack of physical gifts. Quintero's kind of sloppy and slow for his size as well. He's gotten some US exposure against cupcakes, and he really hasn't impressed me. DeMarco I like the best of the three, but he doesn't seem to have the machismo of most Mexican fighters, so I don't know if he can become a big star with Mexicans. Mexicans like high skill boxer-punchers who are willing to go to war. DeMarco is a straight up boxer, almost Euro style, who stays on the outside and uses his size to his advantage. Also, he's not quick either and telegraphs his punches quite a bit, though I was impressed by how he handled Kid Diamond.
damn...how can i forget about segura.....the man gave us one of the best fights ever......escobedo is good too, i love the way he shut stark up :bbb
