You know you've got problems when you're trying to think of good wins for someone and the first one that comes to mind is a guy who, prior to the fight, had lost three in a row at middleweight, then moved up and won four fights against opponents with a combined record of 51 - 61. Then subsequent to the fight, lost another three in a row...
You mean Ottke-Reid? The ref was a twat. He actually warned Reid (on more than one occasion) for legitimately punching Ottke atsch.
Sven never won the WBC. He beat Mitchell for the WBA and won the IBF when he faced he beat Charles Brewer. And dont bother surfing boxrec looking for comparisons. At the time Ottke was the consensus number 1 and had fought far better names to date than Joe ever did. All Joe ever did was face his left overs when they didnt matter anymore. That being said Sven was a horribly negative fighter and truly awful to watch. Other than when he KO'ed Mundine his entire career was an "amateur" show snooze fest.
So Did I understand right about your text that you mean Calzaghe fans should not make mock of Ottke? IMO I remember Ottke and Calzaghe pretty much in same manner
Calzaghe fans blithely ignore facts and believe what they want. Neither man wanted the fight back then. Both were making large sums of money defending their respective belts. BUT the facts remain Sven was the bigger name states side held the more highly regarded belt and fought a number of name opponents in their prime long before they became cannon fodder for Joe. Essentially though their careers were pretty much the same.
like i said before calzaghe is just a better fighter then ottke....but i'm afraid calzaghe will be overrated for his era and ATG list once we look back in 20 years.....for christ sakes the guy hid under a rock most of his carear....and fought a shot eubank.
