How does he do against these featherweights Ernesto Marcel Alexis Arguello Salvador Sanchez Vicente Saldivar Marco Antonio Barrera Manny Pacquiao Azumah Nelson Also, how would you describe him as a fighter? What kind of style was he best against, and what would he be worst against?
Very good box fighter who was dirty and ruthless,a fine champion who would have given Sanchez one hell of a fight. He beats Nelson,Saldivar, and goes very close with the others,imo. He was tall knew how to use his reach ,a decent puncher ,especially to the nuts, good judge of pace ,and relaxed in the ring.
Thanks, good description of him. Dirty seems to be the word most often associated with him. He looks like a very smooth fighter from the small amount of footage I've seen.
Have you seen the Juan Laporte fight? After seeing that one, it's clear why people refer to him as dirty. I tried to count the number of low blows, elbows, and punches to the back by Pedroza but I lost count. Sure wish he and Sanchez had fought. I'm on the fence about that one.
He was. When people call him dirty they're referring to his craftiness in close primarily. He knew every trick in the book and used it to his advantage. He was similar to a much smoother, more versatile Sandy Saddler in that regard, minus the power. That's not to say he lacked pop, because he was certainly capable of digging those bolo style body punches deep. He's one of my favorite fighters to watch from mid to close range for that reason, he was just extremely smooth, poised, and well versed in there. As I said, he often employed bolo style punches to the head and body, often countering off an opponent's missed right hands and hooks with slick little uppercuts. When you throw in the fact that he was an excellent mover, a skilled defensive fighter, and utilized one of the best sneak straight rights I've ever seen, you really have a guy who, IMO, matches up well with pretty much any of the top Featherweights.
No, but I have heard very similar things about the fight and Pedroza's tactics. He sounds a lot like Hopkins - sneaky right hands, craftiness in close, skilled defense, excellent mover, etc. I really need to see more of him. Who would you favor between him and Marcel?
I remember him for the traits the others have posted. But haven't seen his fights in 25 years, only one on youtube is Mcguigan. So anyone have footage to refresh my memory.
One of my favorite featherweights to watch also...The way he handled Ford straight after Sanchez had been given such a tough fight from the Guyanian, was brilliant. I really think at that stage in their careers Pedroza probably would have beaten Sanchez...who looked like he was still learning. He certainly beats a raw featherweight Pac...and I would put money on him beating MAB aswell. He is a very live chance against all the rest...but such were the quality of them Im sure you could argue it either way.
Prime for Prime eeks out a decision against Sanchez I think. He WAS dirty, but only in the same way Hopkins is now. Tricksy is a word I prefer. Or indeed experienced.
One could consider him dirty. Tito and B-hops used the same tricks as Eusebio. Pedroza was tough to beat. H2H, He could beat pretty much everyone. Prime Sanchez or Nelson would give him hell, though, and I couldn't pick a winner in these fights.
