Prime Chavez was like a machine, always forward always on the offensive, never got tired. I think prime Chavez at 135 was unbeatable, truly one of the best fighters in boxing.

Yes, this is absolutely true, but Greg Haugen got off a sweet line with that cab driver thing and the haters have never and will never drop it. JCC MADE Haugen take it back in the ring, it was hilarious lol

I think his resume is a bit overrated by a lot of people, but I do not think his ability is overrated at all, he WAS an ATG in terms of h2h effectiveness and skills. So in that respect, we are in agreement.

However, your sentence that I have highlighted red - I couldn't disagree more. That sort of attitude is why we have people acclaiming the Calzaghes of this world as elite ATGs. For an easy example, look at Valuev's record before he fought Chagaev! Notching up many wins against a zero is NOT and never will be indicative of greatness. It is purely numerical, purely statistical. Value can only be found in looking beyond the numbers. Consistency is not something of any real value if you are consistently facing handpicked and overmatched opposition, with only the very occasional risk taken in terms of comp (in Calzaghe's case a couple of fights at the end of his career, in Valuev's case he remained consistent until he faced the acid test and was exposed).

If you think Chavez is great then fine, I think so too, but I can't go along with that reason. Saying 87-0 is purely numerical, if you look beyond that simple figure then you do indeed find that Chavez had a great career, great achievements, and beat some top quality opponents. These are the milestones of his greatness, not 87 fights the majority of which were against shocking comp.

Numbers mean nothing without a closer look! Remember Valuev!!!

I hear what your saying but as said by Freddie-Wak (I think it was Freddie) at the start of the thread, Chavez was a boy fighting men & learning the hard way, Mexico is one of the toughest places in the world to learn your trade in boxing, its nowhere near the sort of matchmaking you get in Europe or even America.
Every fighter in history starts easy & moves up levels as they get better, Chavez was no different but Mexico aint no picnic at any stage of a fighters career.

I understand 87-0 is basically just a number but its a number that has rarely been touched in boxing history & for the majority of Julio`s career, he was active at the elite level.

not only that, but as boxrec clearly states.... a lot of records aint even up to date.....my boy fights in mexico right now and is 6-1, and boxrec has him listed as 2-0.......a lot of those fighters weren't making their debut with him, they just stimply didnt have any info on him.......another one of my boys is 5-0 over there and they dont even have his listed

2 more of my friends debut about a month ago, have had 2 fights since and they still aint on boxrec and probably never will be......so all that 0-0-0 crap is bull****.....
