I notice Cotto stretches alot befor working out, Why is this?

I have seen other fighters stretch but only have seen Bhop and Miguel do it for so long before even starting to work out... On one video last week, Cotto stretched forever  ... why is this?

I ask because I am not a boxer!

Plus he wants to minimize soreness so he stretches before and after his workouts.

A lot of good research has been done on stretching and work outs. There is NO evidence of stretching minimizing muscle sorenes(DOMS) at all, it's a total myth, and stretching before doesn't seem to prevent injury, in fact it seems to increase the likelyhood of getting injured, the theory being that it loosens the joints making it more unstable. Also stretching pre workout makes muscles weaker.

    just found this :

Epidemiologists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reviewed 350 earlier studies on flexibility, stretching, and injury prevention. They concluded that no evidence demonstrates that stretching prevents injuries.

Dr. Andrew Weil suggests that instead of stretching, the best way to warm up for a workout is to do a slower version of the exercise you're about to perform. Walk before running. Lift lighter weights before heavier ones.

“Although stretching may not prevent injuries, it does improve flexibility, lengthen muscle tissue, improve posture and body awareness and helps neutralize stress,” Weil adds. “For best results, stretch after your workout when your muscles are warm and most elastic.”
