What was Oscar De La Hoya's greatest, most complete performance?

I voted for Trinidad. I don't care if he did run at the end, Oscar put on a ****ing clinic in that fight.

 

i saw the hernandez fight once years ago. i had oscar winning most (if not all) of the rounds for how long it went. i think he broke hernandez nose, which forced the stoppage.

now the vargas fight is my favorite performance from oscar. i'm not a fan of both guys, and kind of leaned on vargas to win. but i was really impressed with how he took over in the middle rounds. for all the trash vargas talked, it was gratifying to see him bloody and punished by the guy he notoriously called a "fake mexican".

 

I would say Mosley for obvious reasons.
Trinidad as well.

 

His total destructions of Leija, Paez, Ruelas were incredible.

His L.A. fight with Genaro was epic.

His clinic on Trinadad and Mosley were masterful.

His spanking on Vargas was satisfying.

 

It's a difficult question, 'greatest & most complete performance'.

I'd go with Vargas, just ahead of Gonzales.

Vargas basically bullied Oscar early. Oscar adapted beautifully, and relied on pure boxing skills and intelligence to outsmart and outbox the bigger & stronger man. Two other variables to consider are that that 'bigger & stronger' man was on 'roids at the time, and it was a stoppage victory.

That's why I place it just ahread of Gonzalez. Which was a clinical and dominating performance against a young and unbeaten champ with an impressive record. In fact, there are half a dozen fights from in and around this period that are worthy nominees. (Leija, Chavez I etc.)

You could also make a case for Molsey II as well. Although, as in the Trinidad fight (although not to the same extreme) he took his foot of the gas in the second half, instead of brining it home.

 

Saying he took his foot off the gas in an overstatement imo.

To me he won rounds 6,7,8,9 and arguably 10.

 

My point was that he wasn't quite as dominant in the second half. Whether that was down to something Oscar wasn't doing, or something Mosley was, is open to interpretation.

I agree that its a very good performance, and he clearly won, IMO.

I'm surprised his demolition of Rafael Ruelas hasn't been mentioned more. Because it was so easy it has been forgotten about a bit, but no-one thought it would be so easy before the fight. That was a special KO.

 

Definetley, Oscar was excellent that night , Under pressure form a stronger opponent to start with , rode it out , turned the fight and the left that (to all intents) finished it was perfect !


There was a great picture in the Boxing Monthly report on that fight that caught that left hook landing , man , Vargas was a tough MF to not just collapse then and there.

Vargas...Though the first 8 rounds against Trinidad were masterful...

 

It was nice seeing Duran show heart to beat barkley when he was clearly past his best and best weight, but I'd never call that his best victory. Although vargas was a great fight and win. His prime fights were JCC 1 or Felix Trinidad IMO.
