calzaghe is taking his time coming out of 'retirement' isnt he ?

You know what? He might actually be retired.

 

He's had as good a career as he could wish for he won't be back. It wasn't about pride for Calzaghe, it was about numbers. He scored some impressive victories and will go down as an ATG. His greatness will be entirely dependant on the knowledge of the reader. For me Calzaghe could have been 25-0 and achieved what he did. The numbers mean nothing and in fact devalue his achievements.

Beating Reid, Eubank, Kessler, Lacy and Hopkins in big bouts plus Brewer, Mitchell Delaney,Starie and co is very, very impressive. He rightly deserves to be held amonsgt the best of all time but where shouldn't be based on his unbeaten tag and pointless defences but on his victories and the manner he achieved them.

I think one of the greatest of all time is over the top

He achieved bigs wins - in a respectable manner - usually grinding out tough points wins

But say W UNA 12 over Charles Brewer - is good - rather than great

Calzaghe is a British great for sure

And he is up there as a modern great of his time - but he was more solid and consistent than really special

 

hes done unless froch does some cleaning house at 168, or hopkins KO's froch before round 4.

 

My point exactly flint. And been one of the greatest of all time can be based on results too. If Calzaghe was 25-0 and put paid to Hopkins, Eubank, Kessler, Lacy Jones Jnr(!!), Reid, plus the better quality challengers you'd be more impressed then been 46-0 and basing his claim to greatness on the **** poor world title longevity and his consecutive victories.

Calzaghe was a great fighter. His victories were impressive. His record was impressive. However attempting to base his claim on 46-0 and beating a 39 year old roy jones to 'prove' himself is plain silly. People will look at the record, then look at the fighter- see that sometimes he can't throw punches properly and that he looks a complete tool when he showboats and immediately consign him to the fraud dustbin.

But underneath the window dressing title and window dressing record, and window dressing victories was a formidible fighter who was never beaten. He had incredible stamina and a smart fighting brain. I was harsh on Calzaghe because he could have been so much more but I conced that he is an ATG and as long as his nuthugging fans don't try and get too cocky he's definately on my ATG list.

Some fighters just don't look great but they get the results and that ultimately is the most impressive thing. Whitker, Monzon, Henry Armstrong etc weren't particularly pleasing on the eye but they were hugely effective, as was calzaghe.

If Froch beats Bute plus Kessler/B-Hop/Abraham (close to impossible) look to Joe to come out of retirement to win a UD over Frochy.

Apart from that it aint worth the risk for Calzaghe. Where he is now he might break my top 100 ATG P4P list......and I went to see Calzaghe-Kessler so I;m no hater, I'm just a realist

I don't expect to see Calzaghe fight again. He is rich and does not need boxing anymore.

 

By the time Froch has racked up enough wins for it to be tempting for Calzaghe he will be close to 40 and will have 3 odd years ring rust. Not going to happen I'm afraid. Stick a fork in him, he's done
