It doesn't matter if Lennox is English, British, Jamaican or Canadian. As part of the Commonwealth he is still entitled to a knighthood for services to sport.
"I have always been English, ever since I emigrated from England and since the kids in Canada beat me up at the age of twelve for having an East London Cockney accent. I thank them for the cockney taunts because the beatings turned me on to boxing. " Lennox Lewis
So what's this British blood you speak of? The one made up of countless genetic variations from numerous invasions our shores have seen over the course of our history? We are a land of mongrels. If you had your genetic history traced I would not be suprised, if like the vast majority of us, that you roots do not lie on this island. So what makes it that Lennox is not British? Because of some arbitrary cut off point that you applied? If someone is born somewhere and grew up there then that is their nationality (the first 12 years are far more significant in our development than the following years). What? There is absolutely zero logic in that. By that reasoning you could say he is more connected to Kyrgyzstan or North Korea.
simple; he's black, successful, a boxer and a great ambassidor for the sport LL doesn't give a rats arse about being knighted though
“You never hear ****** chants at British football grounds now like we did when England played Spain,” Lewis said during an interview with Piers Morgan for GQ magazine. “That was shocking. Britain has changed a lot. When I go back to my old neighbourhood in East Ham, I'm amazed by how different it seems. My barber, Carlos, is still there, but that's about it. The ethnicity is very different. And the laws are getting a lot stricter against racism, which is great. The Stephen Lawrence case and others have made a big difference. “I remember feeling that people didn't like me just because of my skin colour. But I also remember a lot of guys coming to beat me up and a white skinhead protecting me. And I was so shocked because I associated a skinhead with German Nazis who hated Jews and black people. “I knew then that there was a part of England that didn't like black people, or racial integration. And you still get that, but a lot of it is ignorance rather than racism. I think education and travel are so important. “My mum took me to Canada when I was 12, but I am British in my heart. There is a real fearlessness to the British that I feel.
I agree. Faldo's was deserved too. He, like Lennox, ruled his sport for several years. What makes me laugh is the damn cyclist or runner who wins a couple of golds at one Olympic games and the get knighted! Less than half an hour of glory for a damn KBE?
I guess getting knighted by the Queen makes for nice theatre, but my respect for Lennox wouldn't increase or decrease one bit, with the title Sir in front of his name.
