Years ago Cottos performance of battling through a bad cut to get a close but clear decision over a top contender woud have been unanimously applauded. A passing mention may have been made about the one low blow, single rabbit punch or the strange 'throw' but whether any or all of these were intentional or not (none of them changed the outcome of the fight IMHO), it would have just been seen as a professional fighter doing what he had to do to win, Cotto would have been praised for it and Clottey criticised for playacting and trying to get a points deduction. Fast forward to today where any little infraction is analysed to death until people convince themselves that they've seen a fight altering incident or that one fighter is a cheat or a coward (strong words!!) based on the most minor fouls committed in the heat of battle. I know its a fact of life of the internet that things get over analysed but sometimes you've just got to pat a fighter on the back for fighting a great fight, pulling out a win under adversity and not always look for a scapegoat or for controversies that just arn't there.
Top post Gaz:good Cotto battled through a cut, and a couple of really rough spells in the middle rounds to outbox Clottey down the stretch for IMO a close but convincing decision (helped out by a 10 - 8 first round); its definitely a result and a performance that increases Cotto's standing in the boxing world. I don't see what all the fuss is about regarding low blows etc. This is boxing for ****s sake, two guys throwing punches at each other for 12 rounds; **** like this happens all the time; its part of the game. And the hit on the back of the head could be seen as Clottey's fault as much as Cotto's.
I think a lot of people now are fans of particular fighters rather than of boxing the sport. I haven't really been reading the threads about Cotto being a **** today but I bet most of the people whinging about him are the same ones that said he would lose before the fight and are just making excuses now. I totally agree that a lot of fans now are wimps and also drama queens. The whole 'Haye conspiracy' bull**** is pathetic as is people critisizing Wlad for fighting Chagaev after Haye pulled out. Whinging about decisions is another thing that seems to happen far more now than before. At one time outrageous decisions like Lewis-Holyfield got critiscized, now people ***** for months about things like Hopkins-Calzaghe and when you ask them their scores most of the people whining only scored it to Hopkins by one point or so.
your spot on gaz.some of the anti cotto threads are a disgrace.if these people cant applaud cotto for that win they shouldnt be watching boxing
dead on, gazoc! these cotto fans crying their skulls out and calling Clottey all kinds of demeaning names is really embarrassing
i dunno why everybodys suprised ..people have been crying about cotto since his pro debute .. they don't like him .. they can't stand him ..every fight for him is a gift .. every time he's knocked someone out i've heard the following day " well if cotto hadn't knocked him out he woulda got knocked out" ... coto has and never will get the respect he truely deserves ... for why? i have no idea
What as been going on? I can't be arsed go through all the threads. Has Cotto being getting ****? It was a great fight first off which I thought Cotto won, dunno what the **** Clottey was doing though towards the end, grabbing the back of his head like it was Lucy Pinders tits when he was hardly grazed. Still a fantastic fight though.
