Ezzard Charles was 28-29 years old and heavyweight champion 1950-1951....How is that shot? Jersey Joe Walcott recorded his career best wins and was heavyweight champion in the 1950s...how is that shot? Please Explain Ruslan Chagaev has no shot against a 1951 Ezzard Charles or 1952 Jersey Joe Walcott
Lets see... Jersey Joe Walcott knocked out Hall of Famer Harold Johnson in 3 rounds, and twice beat Hall of Famer Ezzard Charles including one time by devastating one punch knockout. Walcott also defeated top 10 rated Omelio Agramonte and Undefeated European Heavyweight Champion 6'6 220lb Hein Ten Hoff. Walcott also was ahead on the cards after 12 against a Prime ATG Rocky Marciano. Compared to Chagaev....Thats a milestone. H2H, Walcott easily beats Chagaev.
Was that due to a Johnson back injury or not? I think i remember you posting an article about it, but i forgot whether or not it was a "legit" win.
Yes, it was due to injury, and the press report said Johnson collapsed in the Walcott fight without being hit. Walcotts record in the 1950s was 6 wins, 4 losses. 60% winning percentage. Charles record in the 1950s was 30 wins, and 20 losses, six of the losses were via KO! Also a 60% winning percentage. Chagaevs record in the 2000s is UNDEFEATED at 25-0-1 with a 96.15% winning percentage. I think it is clear that Chagaev would be a top 5 heavyweight in the 1950s, and I highly doubt he get Kod or lose to journeyman as Charles and Walcott did in their careers.
I was talking about decades here Suzie Q. Walcott’s record in the 1950’s was 6 wins, 4 losses. 60% winning percentage. Charles record in the 1950’s was 30 wins, and 20 losses, six of the losses were via KO! Also a 60% winning percentage. Chagaev’s record in the 2000’s is UNDEFEATED at 25-0-1 with a 96.15% winning percentage. I think it is clear that Chagaev would be a top 5 heavyweight in the 1950’s, and I highly doubt he get Ko’d or lose to journeyman as Charles and Walcott did in their careers. Now, if you think Chagaev is not a top five heavyweight in the 1950's, please list 5 who were better. And make sure they were winning at least 80% of their fights, were not down multiple times, and were not Ko'd multiple times. I'll spot you Liston and Marciano.
Nope. Me and Old Fogey and others did research on it, we found that it was a legite victory. Johnson was knocked down by a Jersey Joe Walcott combination in the 2nd round and UPON getting floored, hurt his back. It was due to a walcott punch that johnson got hurt. In the 3rd round johnson collasped, some say still dizzy from the knockdown and getting pummeled by walcott, other reports say he just fell. However Walcott was winning the fight handidly, had KNOCKED DOWN johnson, and johnson did not get injured UNTIL walcott floored him with a crisp combination. As far as im concerned, if you get knocked down by a punch and hurt urself on the way to the canvas....its a legit victory in my eyes. Hence the reason why Walcott got CREDIT in history for the "KNOCKOUT" victory rather than a No Contest. I also talked to a Famous Philadelphia Boxing Historian Chuck Hasson and another Historian who posts here as "Albinored" and he reported seeing it live and remembering it was a legit victory for Walcott. Heres what Chuck Hasson had to say "Jersey Joe Walcott knocked out Manyunk's Harold Johnson on this day in 1950 at the Philadelphia Arena. After looking good and out-boxing Jersey Joe at the beginning of the bout, Johnson was knocked down at the end of the second round by some hard shots. He was able to continue for the next round, but eventually toppled as he pursued Walcott, seemingly still dizzy from the knockdown. There was much concern, speculation of a fix, delayed payment of the purses, and talk of revoking Johnson's license. But in the end there was no scandal or misconduct found." Mendoza, Please enough. You are simply going by boxrec. You have no idea what you are talking about. We have buried this case over a year ago when me and Old Fogey and MarcianoFrasier all posted information which stated Johnson did not hurt his back until after walcott had floored him with hard punches. You are wrong. if you wish to not give walcott full credit for victory then we will debate this, please start another thread
1. Sonny Liston- Chagev does not have a chance in hell 2. Rocky Marciano- Chagev does not have a chance in hell 3. Jersey Joe Walcott- Walcott would outclass him badly 4. Ezzard Charles- Charles easily 5. Floyd Patterson- Floyd would turn his face into hamburger 6. Ingemar Johansson- Say Goodnight Chagaev! 7. Joe Louis- Chagaev would never get away from Louis jab, louis takes the decision 8. Archie Moore- Moore outsmarts chagaev 9. Harold Johnson - Johnson outboxes and outjabs him 10. Cleveland Williams- Williams outslugs and outworks him 11. Zora Folley- Folley displays a jabbing clinic and boxing lesson 12. Eddie Machen- Machen outcounters the counterpuncher 13. Clarence Henry- Henry pounds away at chagaev 14. Bob Baker- Baker beats chagaev in every department 15. Nino Valdes- Chagaev doesnt have the power to earn Valdez respect 16. Roland Lastarza- Lastarza wins a snoozer 17. Rex Layne- Layne outworks chagaev in a brutal war ALL OF THESE men are better than Ruslan Chagaev
Jersey Joe Walcott beat THREE hall of famers, 2 of them by knockout in the 1950s. How many hall of famers has Ruslan Chagaev beat? How sly of you to bring this up and nitpick charles record post 1954 when he was completley utterly physically shot. Charles record 1950-1954 is more impressives than Chagaevs. Chagaev was beneficial to have the controversial decisions go in his favor, while charles suffered some highly questionable decisions go against him(layne II, Johnson, walcott IV)
