But who did he beat ? yeah gets credit for being there , but the thread was about what he could have achieved. So much of the love for JT on here is based on could'ves and would'ves ! I love JTs style too but you can't deny he pissed a lot of his talnet away !
Well a lot of people thought he beat Peter. Anyway, I'm not denying Toney is a fat slob who made numerous errors in his career.
at the end of the day, discipline, like punching power or speed is something you either got or you don't. It's a talent in itself.

Far as I know Freddie Roach has gone on record as saying James Toney is the most naturally talented fighter he's ever worked with. Born fighter was his words if I remember. A motivated Toney in the pocket standing and fighting is an awesome sight. Plus I really do believe him when he says he'd fight anyone anytime bottomline.
If Toney had stayed properly fit, he'd be a lhw now, maybe a cruiser. He is only a hw because of the extra bulk. If he had stayed fit and motivated through his whole career, he could've been really special. He still had a great career and is a top 100 ATG IMO, but he had all the skill in the world.
Toney has the skills & the chin to beat most heavies, a dedicated Toney would be tough for anyone to beat for sure.
people forget that despite his laziness outside the ring Toney is a two-time fighter of the year. With his skills and his willingness to fight anyone and everyone, he could have been a true atg legend.
He was amazing because all of his heavyweight size came from fat. He was/is short 5'9", and his bones and/or frame didn't increase in size as he moved up to heavyweight. He was just a small guy that gained weight (fat) and turned himself into a heavyweight. And he still fought so effectively and competed with natural big men.
Yeah probably, but then again he could make more money at HW and he could weigh 215-225 without being too fat. I don't know if he could've beaten the Klits. I don't know if he had enough power and if he was big enough. they would tie him up when he got inside where he would need to be.
