Yet, ask most middle-interest boxing fans who either of those guys are and they wouldn't be able to tell you.

I don't see how he was any further removed from his prime in 1971 (sure, he had a layoff but he had a few fights before Frazier) than he was in 67.

The victories that made him the common consensus GOAT weren't until the 70s.

I understand your point but it's the PERFORMANCES that point to ali's prime. Not saying his opposition was great or the wins were as notable but in all seriousness, have you watched those two fights?

I think you need to learn how to read.

I even strictly said "This is not about who was the greatest, or who had the best achievements, this is about who was hardest to beat in their prime at the weight they're in"

Calzaghe is the best ever SMW through resume, acheivements and longevity. Doesn't stop the fact that a prime Roy Jones Jr probably beats him in 10.

Hardest to beat doesn't translate to "best ever" - Winky Wright for instance could probably lay claim to 154 for being near impossible to beat - yet he's never going to get confused as the greatest at the weight now is he?

I have - but what you're missing is that the performances he gave in those fights are akin to saying "Tua is the greatest fighter ever because he knocked out one of the best ever Cruiserweights and one of the longest reigning modern HW Champs, both within 30 seconds of the first round"

Performance against guys who are of lesser callibre don't mean much, take a look at how Calzaghe dicked around while dispatching Jeff Lacy. Lacy is on the same level of achievement as either of the two fighters you reference in Ali's case - yet they mean nothing when stacked up against the victories against Chuvalo, Norton, Frazier, Foreman, etcetera.

When you improve as a fighter and you still look like **** and get criticized harshly every time you fight I wouldn't say that's much of an improvemnt.

I don't really like your list.

    130 - Mayweather/Arguello
    135 - Roberto Duran
    140 - Aaron Pryor
    147 - SRR/SRL
    154 - Thomas Hearns
    160 - Carlos Monzon
    168 - Roy Jones
    175 - Michael Spinks
    190-200 - Evander Holyfield
    200+ - Lennox Lewis (arguable)

    :huh

Ali was 29 & had only 2 fights in 3 n a half yrs before his 1st pro loss vs Frazier.

Tyson was 24 & never had any lay-off before losing to Douglas.

absolutely, but we're not measuring victories. the bottom line is the ali of '67 would beat easily the ali of '71-'74
