How would have Hagler fared in the 1980s LHW division?

Very very hard task for him...that was a very strong light heavy era.

I dont think he would have went that well.

Too small. I will go as far to say Qawi, Saad and Spinks would've stopped him.

I can see Marvin beating Conteh ...

I can see Marvin cutting up Galindez

I can see him decisioning blown up middleweight and often passionless Mustafa.

I cannot see him beating Saad or Johnson, both too much activity and firepower .. Johnson could be a war and could go either way ...

I cannot see him beating Qwai ...

I cannot see him beating Spinks but giving him a tough bout ...

 

I understand your reasoning over the Mustafa fight.

However, Conteh would be too much IMO. If anything I think Spinks blows him out the easiest. Marv was beast of a MW at 5'8, but unlike qawi didn't have the frame to accomodate the extra weight..........IMO!!!

 

I think Conteh at his very best beats him...but by the time Marvin was in his prime and would have been ready to move up Johnny was all partied out..and actually retired I think.

Eddie I wouldnt consider a blown up middleweight...not as though he didnt fit the light heavyweight frame nicely..He had a good 4 inches on Marvin and showed at his best at the weight he was an excellent technician with a great overall package.

Though the timing doesnt synch up I reckon...I mean both were hitting their primes in the late 70's, early 80's...but Marvin wasnt an established star until Eddie was on the way out.

 

I think he might have done fairly well against some of the contenders, and on the right night may have captured one of the fragmented belts. Dominated the division however, is not something that I think would be in the cards for Hagler.

 

Hagler's frame wasn't suited to LHW. His speed would have been effected. B-Hop carried the weight well after working with Shilstone. But he had the height to carry the weight and perform extremely well to go along with it. Just too much for Hagler's 5' 9" frame. However, I think super-middleweight would have been fine for Marvin.

 

IF, and it's a big if, Hagler could carry say 168-170 lbs without significantly losing mobillity, I think he could've given Qawi major problems with his movement and boxing abillity. That's the only matchup that I like for Marv. I think the taller guys would've been too much and forced Hagler to take too many risks.

 

Those are good points. At 6'3", Michael Spinks would have been the worst opponent you could have put Hagler in with. Possibly a mismatch..

 

I don't think Marvin does well at this weight at all.He could possibly take out a fringe contender but someone like Conteh, Galindez, and definitely, Spinks, would be too much.

 

he actually boxed at about 165lbs as am amatuer but he wasnt a LHW he was little at 165

 

Hagler has the advantage of a better chin than any of the LHWs. I think Spinks would be too much for him, but he'd have a fair shot against the rest.

 

This has been discused many times before, Hagler was a natural middleweight, and not a big one height wise. he would not have faired well and knew it. Also the money was at MW and the WW coming up.

MH v Sadd, Mustafa, Quai, Spinks would not have been good for him. End of story. Those fellows were just too big and strong for MH.
