Did he tried to pull a catchweight campaign when he tries to go up from Lightweight to jWW, to Welterweight, to Middleweight?
I've only heard of a couple proposed catchweight fights for Duran. An ESPN report talked about the possibility of a Hagler-Duran catchweight fight after Duran defeated Moore for an 154. lb title, but Hagler said no to the catchweight. While fighting at 154, a fight with 140 lb. champ Pryor was proposed at a catchweight of 150, but Pryor's managerial problems messed up the fight.
That would have been a GREAT fight! I'd might lean towards Pryor in winning a Decision but NO WAY the Hawk batters duran from Pillar to post. These two warriors were pretty much on the same level only that Duran got far more out of his career than Aaron, but talent, skill and championship spirt were all on level with each other in their primes.
Duran was pretty inconsistent around this time period, and might've had problems making 150 with his eating/partying habits, but otherwise he should beat Pryor. Better, more polished, more accustomed to the higher weights (Pryor never did much above 140). While Pryor could employ some good defense and upper body movement, he'd probably be right there in Duran's range to hit. Not the slick boxing style that Duran was having problems with.
Pryor wouldnt have carried the weight as well as Duran could I imagine...its really all speculation how Pryor would have faired coming up in weight but we know unequivocally Duran was still very capable. Prime for prime at 140..now there is a fight.
**** SAKES!!! Pryor looked like **** above 140 pounds.......... The Duran who scaled 152 for Cuevas and 152 1/2 for Moore in 1983 could've made 150 with no problem..... Duran pulled his head outta his ass after his slobbish 157 pound decision win over James Batten on the walk-out card of "Pryor-Arguello 1" in Nov. 1982.... Had Pryor refused a rematch with Arguello in '83 and gone to 148, 149 or 150 pounds to fight Duran in the summer of '83, Pryor would've been murdered in the ring........ Christ, Pryor could land his haymaker on Duran and Duran would not even blink an eye..... Pryor up at 147+ pounds in 1983 would be slower and way less effective than he was against Arguello down in Florida.......... Duran eats him alive.......... MR.BILL
The fight was supposed to happen in 1982, I think, before Duran had his "resurrection" against Moore. Not that I think it makes a difference, I still make Duran the favorite.
